Typical weekday for students in three different countries

Student answer (Band 5.5)

A CHART SHOWING THE SLEEPING, STUDYING AND RELAXING REPORT OF STUDENTS STUDYING IN UK, JAPAN AND GERMANY

According to the bar chart provided above, we were given the distribution of the typical weekday of students studying in 3 different countries. The countries are UK, Germany and Japan. The distribution shows their sleeping, studying and relaxing pattern. We have three different bar for each country with three different colors for identification if its sleeping, relaxing or studying. The blue represents sleeping, red represents studying while green represents relaxing.

Firstly, we are going to start with the UK. The sleeping rate of the students in the UK is 8.5, studying rate is 8 while the relaxing rate is 7. This shows that the rate at which students sleep is higher compared to the rate at which they study and relax.

The next country is Japan, the sleeping rate in Japan is 7, the studying rate is 13, the relaxing rate is 4. This report shows that students in Japan study more than they sleep and relax.

The last country is Germany, the sleeping rate in Germany according to the report is 8, the studying rate is 9 while the relaxing rate is 7. This report shows that students in Germany also study more than they sleep and relax.

In conclusion, Japan has the highest studying rate among the three countries, UK and Germany has the same relaxing rate among their students. Japan also has the lowest sleeping and relaxing rate among both countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main features of the prompt by reporting the data for sleeping, studying, and relaxing across the three countries, thus covering all parts of the task. However, the treatment of the data is somewhat mechanical, relying on a listing approach rather than a fully integrated comparison. While the overview at the end attempts to highlight key points, such as Japan having the highest studying rate, some comparisons are less developed or slightly inaccurate, such as stating that Japan has the lowest relaxing rate when the figure for Japan is 4, which is indeed the lowest, but the phrasing of the overall summary lacks analytical depth. Ideas are relevant, but certain aspects are underdeveloped, keeping the response at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs dedicated to individual countries, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'The next country', and 'In conclusion', which help to structure the flow of information. However, some cohesive referencing is slightly repetitive or mechanical, and paragraphing could be more sophisticated to group comparisons together rather than treating each country in absolute isolation. Progression is generally logical, but the transitions between ideas can feel formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, employing terms such as 'distribution', 'pattern', and 'rate'. However, the range is limited and repetitive, with frequent reuse of the word 'rate' (e.g., 'sleeping rate', 'studying rate', 'relaxing rate'). There are noticeable limitations in lexical precision and word choice, which prevent the response from achieving a higher band. While meaning is communicated clearly without severe impedance, the lack of varied or less common lexical items keeps the vocabulary score constrained.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as conditional or introductory participial structures, though simple structures predominate. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including minor agreement and prepositional issues (e.g., 'we were given', 'three different bar', 'UK and Germany has'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. Complex sentence attempts are present but lack consistent accuracy, reflecting typical characteristics of this performance level.
