Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, containing only 46 words (with 9 words copied directly from the prompt). Because the length requirement is significantly unmet, the task is addressed only minimally. The writing attempts to introduce the chart and mention a couple of data points for the UK, but it stops abruptly before providing an overview, reporting data for the other countries (Japan and Germany), or making any meaningful comparisons. To reach higher bands, the writer must fully address all parts of the prompt by describing the main features of all categories across all three countries and presenting a clear summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The text is extremely brief, consisting of only three short sentences, which makes it difficult to assess organizational skills fully. There is an introductory sentence followed by two brief sentences attempting to present data. However, true paragraphing and logical progression are absent because the response is incomplete. Cohesive devices are minimal, relying on simple connectors like 'and'. To improve, the writer needs to group related data logically, structure the essay into distinct introductory, body, and overview paragraphs, and use a variety of cohesive devices to link ideas smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, such as 'activities', 'countries', and 'time used'. There are also capitalization and punctuation errors in lexical items, such as 'japan', 'uk', and 'bar chat'. The range of vocabulary is severely limited due to the shortness of the text, preventing the demonstration of less common lexical items or precise reporting language. To enhance lexical resource, the student should incorporate a wider variety of synonyms and functional phrases for describing data trends, such as 'allocated', 'spent', or 'proportion'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammatical structures are extremely limited, consisting of basic clauses. There are notable inaccuracies in grammar and mechanics, such as missing articles ('In uk', 'percentage of time used to sleeping'), incorrect prepositions, and lack of proper capitalization for proper nouns ('japan', 'uk', 'chat'). Because the sentences are so simple and incomplete, it is impossible to evaluate complex sentence forms. To improve, the writer needs to practice constructing accurate simple and complex sentences, paying careful attention to subject-verb agreement, prepositions following nouns and verbs, and capitalization.
