Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially and fails to meet the minimum word count requirement, falling short at 117 words. While the writer attempts to summarise the main features of the chart, the reporting of data is inaccurate in places; for instance, the student refers to the figures as 'percentages' (e.g., '8.5% students sleeping') when the chart measures hours. The overview is rudimentary and lacks a clear global trend. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure the minimum word length is achieved, correctly interpret the units of measurement shown in the visual data, and develop a more comprehensive overview of the main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates some organisation with a basic introduction, body paragraphs, and an overall summary statement. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the linking of ideas is basic and sometimes repetitive, relying on mechanical cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Meanwhile', and 'On the other hand'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of data lacks sophisticated logical flow. To improve cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of referencing words and transitional phrases naturally, rather than relying on formulaic sentence openings, and ensure that ideas are sequenced in a clearer, more progressive manner.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'enlargment' and 'decreasment', but these contain word-form and spelling errors. There are also noticeable issues with word choice, such as using 'percentage' instead of hours, and repetitive phrasing throughout the response. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire, use precise vocabulary related to data trends and units of measurement, and carefully check their spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response shows a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple constructions and repetitive subject-verb-object patterns. Attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty, and there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and punctuation issues like double spacing ('all the countries'). Frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with a higher degree of accuracy, paying closer attention to basic sentence mechanics and grammatical agreements.
