Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart compares the weekday activities of the students among three different countries.
Overall, Japan accounted for the highest in study, but experienced lowest in relaxing. In contrast, the number of relaxing students is same for the UK and Germany, while the sleeping trend for three countries is fluctuate slightly.
Looking at the graph in more detail, the figure for sleeping hours is slightly higher from the other two countries almost at 8.5, but Germany accounted for the second highest in this trend with figure 8, Japan is at third by having 7 students. A notable trend is shown by Japan in study approximately at 13, while in other countries, the number of studying students is 9 in Germany and 8 in the UK.
In contrast, the figure for relaxing students is almost stable for two countries stood at 7 for the UK and Germany, but the amount is less for Japan around at 4 respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main contrasts accurately: Japan has the highest study figure (13) and the lowest relaxation figure (4), while the UK and Germany both record 7 for relaxing. You also report the sleeping values and compare the three countries, so the response covers the chart’s key categories. The overview is present, although “the sleeping trend … fluctuate slightly” is vague and does not clearly state that sleeping figures are relatively similar, ranging from 7 to 8.5. Some details are also described imprecisely: these figures represent hours spent on activities, not numbers of students, and the UK’s 8.5 hours is the highest sleeping value. A more precise overview and consistent reference to hours would strengthen the report further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs comparing the activity figures. The progression from the broad contrasts to sleeping and studying, then relaxing, is easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Looking at the graph in more detail,” and “In contrast” help signal the stages of the report. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “the figure for relaxing students is almost stable for two countries stood at 7” combines ideas awkwardly, and “respectively” at the end does not clearly refer to the figures. Improve cohesion by using simpler, more direct comparisons and ensuring each linking expression has a clear relationship to the information around it.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of chart-related vocabulary, including “compares,” “accounted for,” “figure,” “notable trend,” and “approximately.” This allows you to describe the main differences, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task. “The highest in study” and “the number of relaxing students” do not express hours spent on activities, while “sleeping trend” is not a precise description of the data. Phrases such as “higher from the other two countries” and “around at 4” also show weak collocation. Aim for precise terms such as “hours spent studying” and “recorded,” and avoid repeating “figure” when a clearer noun or verb is available.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses beginning with “while” and “but.” Most of the comparisons remain understandable, but some grammatical errors make the sentences awkward. For example, “the sleeping trend … is fluctuate” uses an incorrect verb form, and “the figure for relaxing students … stood at 7” has an unclear structure because the subject and clause do not fit together. In “the figure for sleeping hours is slightly higher from the other two countries,” the comparison is not grammatically formed. Practise building direct comparison sentences with accurate subjects and verbs, such as “Sleeping time was slightly higher in the UK than in the other two countries.”
