Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main contrasts and report most figures accurately: Japan has the highest studying total at 13 hours, and its relaxing figure is lowest at 4. However, the overview is unclear because it refers to red, blue, green and grey bars, although the chart’s categories are Sleeping, Studying and Relaxing; there is no grey-bar category. This makes the comparison that Japan’s grey-bar activity is lower difficult to interpret. You also misidentify the UK’s longest activity: 8.5 hours is sleeping, not studying, and the overview’s claim about blue bars cannot be checked against the chart labels. Name the activities directly and give a clear overview of the main pattern across all three countries to make the response more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an overview followed by country-specific details and a final comparison. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is weakened by the repeated references to coloured bars rather than the chart’s activity labels, so links between the overview and supporting details are not always clear. The final comparison largely repeats the point that Japan has the highest and lowest figures, rather than adding a distinct comparison across the three countries. Some punctuation spacing, such as “UK,Japan” and “overall,at,” also interrupts the flow. Use clear paragraph links and consistent category names, and organise comparisons around the activities or countries without repeating the same point.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related language, including “accounts for,” “considerably higher,” “compared with,” and “most time-consuming.” These phrases help describe quantities and comparisons. However, the repeated wording “activity represented by the … bar” is cumbersome and less precise than naming the activities, especially since the chart’s categories are not identified by colours in the transcription. There are also spelling and word-choice slips, including “slightley” and “thr,” and “figure” is repeated frequently. More accurate chart vocabulary and a wider selection of comparison terms would improve precision and flexibility. For example, use “hours spent sleeping” or “studying time” instead of referring to a bar colour.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause in “while students spend 7 hours…” and a comparison structure with “compared with.” Most sentences communicate the intended figures, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical and punctuation control is inconsistent: the opening overview sentence beginning “In contrast” lacks a comma after the introductory phrase, and spacing around commas is uneven. The phrase “making it most time-consuming activity” also needs an article (“the most time-consuming activity”). Continue using varied sentence structures, while checking articles, punctuation and sentence boundaries carefully so that the comparisons read smoothly and accurately.
