Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the chart’s three activities and countries, and it correctly notes that Japanese students spend the most time studying. However, the overview is incomplete and includes a misleading comparison: relaxing is not the lowest category in every country, since UK and German students spend less time relaxing than studying but more than sleeping in the UK, while in Germany sleeping is lower. The figures are also presented as percentages, although the chart gives hours, and the UK study figure and several key comparisons are omitted. Most importantly, the response is far below the required 150 words, so it cannot provide a sufficient summary of the main features. Report the units accurately and add the main figures and contrasts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response into an introduction and an overview, which gives the reader a starting point. However, the answer ends after these two short paragraphs and does not progress to a detailed account of the data. The linking word “while” is used after a full stop, leaving the second overview point as a fragment rather than connecting it smoothly to the first. The ideas are also not clearly ordered by activity or by country. Develop a separate body paragraph with comparisons, and use simple, accurate links such as “By contrast” or “In the UK” to guide the reader through the figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses a small set of relevant chart terms, including “proportion,” “sleeping,” “studying,” and “relaxing,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the vocabulary is limited and several spelling or word-choice errors reduce clarity: “perposes” appears to mean “purposes,” and “studing” is misspelled twice. “Proportion” is also inaccurate for values measured in hours, while “upward trend” does not describe a comparison among countries at one point in time. Use precise reporting language such as “hours spent,” “the highest figure,” and “compared with,” and check spelling carefully. A wider range of accurate terms would make the summary clearer and more appropriate to Task 1.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both an introductory sentence and an overview, but the grammatical range is narrow and control is inconsistent. In the opening, “three types of weekday perposes sleeping, studing, and relaxing” lacks punctuation or a grammatical link before the list, and “three different country” has incorrect number agreement. The second paragraph contains a sentence fragment beginning “while,” and the clause “studing proportion represent” has an agreement problem. These errors make the relationships between ideas less clear. Practise complete sentences with accurate articles and plurals, for example, “The chart compares the number of hours students in three countries spend sleeping, studying and relaxing.” Then connect contrasting information within a correctly punctuated sentence.
