Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the three countries and activities, and your overview selects relevant features: Japanese students study the most, while relaxing is equal in the UK and Germany. Most figures you report are accurate, including 13 hours of study in Japan and 7 hours of relaxation in the UK and Germany. However, the response only partly develops the comparison: “They were decreased 4%” does not clearly explain that Japan’s study time is four hours more than Germany’s, and the chart gives hours, not percentages. The claim that sleeping was “elevated in UK” is also imprecise, since the UK figure is only slightly above Germany’s. The response is 10 words below the required minimum. Add a fuller overview and explain the main contrasts in hours.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an opening, an overview and separate sections for studying, relaxing and sleeping, so the reader can identify the broad organisation. However, progression within the body is limited by repeated statements, especially “relaxing both remained same in UK and Germany,” which appears twice. Linking words such as “While,” “Whereas,” “Moreover” and “In contrast” are often used mechanically or as sentence fragments, and the repeated “They were decreased” does not make the comparisons clear. Grouping the figures by activity and using complete comparison sentences would create a more logical flow. For example, compare study hours across all three countries in one paragraph, then compare sleeping and relaxing in another, with clear references to each country.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “studying,” “sleeping,” “relaxing” and “remained same,” and the reader can generally understand which activities you are describing. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or repetitive. “They were decreased” is not a natural way to report a difference, and “elevated” is an awkward choice for describing the UK’s sleeping figure. The repeated use of “higher,” “lower” and “same” also restricts precision. In addition, using “%” for values that represent hours makes the data description less accurate. Aim for concise comparison language such as “spent,” “recorded,” “compared with” and “the highest/lowest figure,” while consistently identifying the unit as hours.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer structures, including “While, the sleeping were elevated in UK” and “Whereas, the sleeping in Germany were 8%,” but these are often faulty, and most sentences follow a simple, repetitive pattern. Subject–verb agreement is a recurring problem: “The bar chart illustrate” should be “illustrates,” and “studying were higher” should be “study time was higher.” There are also incomplete or awkward constructions, such as “In Germany, studying were 9%” and the standalone “In contrast studying higher in japan.” These errors sometimes make relationships between figures difficult to follow. Practise complete comparison sentences with accurate subjects and verbs, and use “whereas” within a sentence rather than as a sentence opener followed by a fragment.
