Typical weekday for students in three different countries

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart compares the typical weekday for students in terms of sleeping, studying and relaxing across three different countries (UK, Japan, Germany)

Overall, Japan had the highest number for studying, however stood at lowest rank for relaxing. Another noteable pattern is the UK overall had most balancing records as none of the actvities were significantly different from each other. Germany similarly exhibited a generally stable trend as well.

Looking closely, sleeping as actvity for a typical weekday for students stood quite smilar across the three countries with UK at 8.5, followed by Germany at 8 and Japan stood at 7. Regarding studying, Japan recorded 13, making it higher than both Uk at 8 and Germany stood at 9.

Turning to relaxing, Uk and Germany both stood at the same figure at 7, meanwhile Japan was significantly lower at 4.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover all three activities and countries, and the overview identifies the key contrasts: Japan records the most study time and the least relaxation, while the UK and Germany have similar relaxation figures. The reported values are accurate, including the sleeping figures and Japan’s 13 hours of study. However, the comparison that the UK’s activities are “none ... significantly different” is not fully supported, since studying is 8 hours and relaxing is 7, while sleeping is 8.5; the claim that Germany is stable is also only briefly explained. The response is 10 words below the required minimum, so the report is somewhat underdeveloped. Add a little more comparison or explanation to make the main features fuller.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for sleeping/studying and relaxing. This makes the information easy to follow, and transitions such as “Looking closely” and “Turning to relaxing” help signal the progression. The overview also gives the reader a useful guide to the comparisons that follow. To show more flexible cohesion, connect related figures more directly rather than relying mainly on paragraph-opening phrases. For example, the sleeping and studying comparisons could be linked to explain how Japan’s study figure contrasts with its lower sleeping figure. Some sentence connections, particularly “however stood at lowest rank,” are not fully smooth, so clearer linking would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing data, including “compares,” “recorded,” “figure,” and “significantly lower,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more varied phrasing, such as “exhibited a generally stable trend.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “highest number for studying,” “stood at lowest rank,” and “most balancing records” do not express the comparisons precisely. Spelling errors such as “noteable,” “actvities,” and “smilar” also reduce accuracy. Aim for standard chart language and check spelling carefully; this will make your comparisons sound more precise and natural without requiring more complicated vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple statements and more complex forms, including “Japan recorded 13, making it higher than both UK at 8 and Germany stood at 9.” Most of the intended comparisons can be understood, but some sentence structures are incomplete or awkward. For instance, “however stood at lowest rank for relaxing” lacks a clear subject after “however,” and “Germany similarly exhibited a generally stable trend as well” combines linking expressions redundantly. The final sentence also needs clearer parallel structure: “UK and Germany both stood at the same figure at 7, meanwhile Japan was...” would be better divided or joined with an appropriate conjunction. Practise complete clauses, articles, and punctuation in comparison sentences.
