Typical weekday for students in three different countries

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart compares how students from UK, Japan and Germany pass their weekdays.

Overall, the Japanese students spend highest amount of time studying while British students prioritize sleeping in the weekdays. In contrast, students from germany likes to allocate most of their in relaxation during weekdays.

In terms of sleeping, the Japanese students recorded the least figure, at around 7 hours. Germans sleeps slighly more at around 8 hours during their weekends. On the other hand, the British stood at 8.5 hours.

Turning to relaxing, the British and German students spend the same amount of time at roughly 7 hours. In contrast, the figure is the lowest for the Japanese at only 4 hours.

The Japanese students spend by far the most amount of time studying at 13 hours during the weeks days. Followed by UK and Germany at 8 and 9 hours respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the chart’s three activities and make relevant comparisons, including Japan’s high study figure (13 hours) and its lower relaxation figure (4 hours). However, the overview contains a significant misreading: it says British students prioritize sleeping, although Germany records the highest sleeping time (8 hours, compared with the UK’s 8.5? Actually the UK is highest at 8.5 hours). More importantly, the claim that German students allocate most time to relaxation is not supported: their study figure is higher. The UK’s 8.5 hours is correctly the highest sleeping figure, so the overview should state this clearly and avoid the contradictory claim about Germany. The response is also five words below the required minimum. Develop the overview around the main contrasts and report the figures accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by separate paragraphs on sleeping, relaxing and studying. This makes the information easy to locate, and transitions such as “In terms of” and “Turning to” help signal changes of focus. The final paragraph, however, begins with a sentence fragment, “Followed by UK and Germany,” which interrupts the flow of the comparison. Some linking is also mechanical, with repeated “In contrast” and “On the other hand.” To strengthen progression, connect the study figures in a complete sentence and use a wider range of concise comparisons, while ensuring that the overview accurately previews the details that follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing the chart, including “recorded,” “figure,” “allocate,” and “roughly,” and the activity terms make the comparisons understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise: “spend highest amount of time,” “prioritize sleeping,” and “most amount of time” could be expressed more naturally as “spend the most time,” “spend the longest time sleeping,” and “the greatest amount of time.” “Pass their weekdays” is also an unsuitable way to describe how time is used. Spelling errors such as “slighly” and “germany” further limit accuracy. Aim for precise, conventional chart language and check spelling and capitalization before finishing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple statements and longer comparative structures, and most of the intended meaning can be understood. However, errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “students from germany likes” should use a plural verb, while “spend highest amount” needs an article before “highest.” “Germans sleeps” also has incorrect subject–verb agreement, and “most of their in relaxation” is not a complete grammatical pattern. The final sentence, “Followed by UK and Germany at 8 and 9 hours respectively,” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. Practise building accurate comparison sentences, checking singular and plural subjects, and using complete clauses with appropriate articles.
