Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main contrast: Japanese students spend the most time studying, while relaxation is lowest in Japan and equal in the UK and Germany. Several figures are also reported accurately, including 13 hours of study in Japan, 8 in the UK and 9 in Germany, and the relaxation figures of 7, 4 and 7. However, the opening calls the chart a weekend routine, although it shows a typical weekday, and the overview contains unclear or inaccurate comparisons. In particular, the UK does not spend more time sleeping than on its other activities: studying is 8 hours, compared with 8.5 sleeping and 7 relaxing. The conclusion that Japanese students are “very hardworking” is an unsupported interpretation. Focus on describing the data neutrally and make the overview precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview, two detail paragraphs and a concluding sentence. This gives the reader some organisation, and comparisons such as the equal relaxation figures for the UK and Germany are placed together. However, progression is not consistently clear: the overview moves between studying, relaxation and sleeping without a clear hierarchy, and the final paragraph repeats earlier information rather than adding a useful summary. Linking words are sometimes mechanical or confusing, as in “Although” and “Nevertheless,” where the relationships between ideas are not clearly expressed. Some references, including “its” and “it,” have unclear antecedents. Group the main comparisons logically and use simpler, more precise transitions to make the sequence easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “amount of time,” “rate,” “lowest” and “dramatic,” and you attempt to compare the countries rather than listing figures alone. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning difficult to follow. “Activities weekend” does not accurately describe the chart, “pass their weekend time” is unnatural, and “gradual time spending rate” is unclear. There are also noticeable spelling errors, such as “leaners,” “threee,” “dramaticly,” “higest” and “sepnd.” Aim for precise, conventional language for describing data—for example, “spend time studying” and “the figure for relaxation”—and check spelling carefully. Avoid evaluative wording such as “hardworking,” which is not supported by the chart.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “Although” and “while,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in sentence structure and agreement appear in phrases such as “another two countries moreover it's has a lowest amount” and “relaxation are remain same.” Verb forms are also problematic in “students spend their time” after a past-tense description and “it had a higest number,” while the sentence beginning “Although Uk had…” does not form a clear complete comparison. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, particularly in the country names and around clauses. Use straightforward present-tense sentences for chart descriptions, check subject–verb agreement, and separate comparisons into complete sentences before attempting more complex structures.
