Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You identify the chart’s subject and give a brief overview, correctly noting that Japanese students spend the most time studying. However, the response reports almost none of the chart’s details: it gives no figures and does not compare the three countries across sleeping, studying and relaxing. The claim that British students prioritised sleeping is not a clear comparison, since sleeping is also the largest activity for German students, while UK students’ sleeping and studying figures are close. The response is also far below the required 150 words, leaving the task only minimally addressed. To improve, include an overview of the main contrasts and support it with accurate figures for each activity and country.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic, sensible structure: an opening sentence introduces the chart, followed by a separate overview beginning with “Overall”. This gives the reader a clear starting point, and the ideas are not difficult to follow. However, the response ends before developing the information, so there is no logical progression through the three activities or comparison between countries. Cohesive links are also very limited, with only “namely” and “while” connecting ideas. Add a body paragraph that groups related figures and uses clear comparisons such as “whereas” or “by contrast”; this would create a fuller progression rather than leaving the overview unsupported.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “activities”, “sleeping”, “studying” and “relaxing”, and the meaning is generally understandable. There is also an attempt to vary expression with “spent” and “prioritised”. However, the range is narrow because the response is very short, and some phrasing is inaccurate or unnatural: “amount of time” would be better expressed as “amounts of time” or “time”, while “spent by the most time” is not a natural collocation. “Bristish” is also misspelled. Use precise chart language such as “spent the most time”, “accounted for” and “compared with”, and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response includes a complex sentence with “while” and a separate overview sentence, showing some ability to vary sentence structure. The main message remains understandable. However, the opening has a subject–verb agreement error: “The bar charts illustrates” should be “The bar chart illustrates” or “The bar charts illustrate”. The phrase “amount of time spent on three different activities … in weekdays” also has problems with number and article/preposition use; for example, “time spent on three activities on weekdays” is more accurate. The short response provides little evidence of a wider range of structures. Practise accurate agreement and sentence patterns, then use them to report comparisons and figures.
