Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify relevant categories and make an attempt at an overview, noting that Japanese students spend the most time studying and that relaxing is relatively low. However, several key figures and comparisons are misreported: studying in Japan is 13 hours, not Germany, and sleeping in Japan is 7 hours, not 4. The claim that the UK follows the opposite pattern is unclear, and saying that UK and Germany are stable does not accurately describe the comparisons. The response therefore addresses the chart only partially, with limited and sometimes inaccurate reporting of its main features. It is also 9 words below the required minimum. To improve, check each country against the chart and include a clear overview of the highest and lowest figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about studying, sleeping and relaxing. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “In contrast” and “In the remained data” attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is not consistently clear: the discussion shifts between categories and countries, and the overview’s claim about an “opposite pattern” is not explained. Some linking phrases are awkward or repetitive, while “Then again” does not clearly show the relationship between the figures. Group the comparisons more logically—for example, report the highest and lowest values first, then compare the countries—and use linking expressions only where they clarify the relationship.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-related vocabulary, including “bar chart,” “figure,” “highest value” and “declined,” so the reader can recognise that you are describing data. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “highest trend,” “remained stable” for values that change, and “the following data.” Repetition of “trend” and “value” also limits precision. Spelling errors such as “fro,” “vlaue” and “remaind” are noticeable and can distract the reader. Aim to use precise chart language and check spelling carefully. For example, describe a figure as “stood at” a number, or say it “increased” or “fell” when comparing values.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including a contrast with “In contrast” and a sequence using “which.” However, the range remains limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “the figure rose from 8 point in UK to 13 points In Germany” has problems with articles, number agreement and capitalisation; “Sleeping also gradually decrease” uses an incorrect verb form; and “It means it remaind stable” has an unclear pronoun reference and faulty sentence construction. Punctuation is also inconsistent, as in “In contrast,Sleeping.” Practise accurate past-tense reporting, articles before country names where needed, and complete sentence structures.
