Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You identify the chart’s general subject and name the three countries and activities, and the point that Japanese students spend the most time studying is accurate. However, the response stops before it reports the main comparisons: for example, Japan’s 13 hours of study contrasts with 8 hours in the UK and 9 in Germany, while relaxing is 4 hours in Japan and 7 in the other two countries. The unfinished phrase “Uk learners spend” leaves another comparison incomplete, and there is no developed overview. The response is also substantially below the required 150 words, so it cannot provide the coverage and supporting figures needed for this task. Include a clear overview and select key figures for all three activities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

There is a basic attempt to move from an introduction to an overview, and the countries and activities are grouped together in a relevant way. However, the response has no clear progression into comparisons or supporting details, and it ends abruptly with “Uk learners spend”. The overview sentence is difficult to follow because “overall bar charts gives information” does not clearly connect the chart to its main findings. Use separate paragraphs for the introduction, overview and detailed comparisons, and connect the figures with simple linking expressions such as “whereas” and “by contrast”. Completing each sentence and organising the information by activity or country would make the report easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “bar chart”, “countries”, “sleep”, “study” and “relax”, so the reader can recognise the topic. However, the vocabulary is very limited and some choices or spellings reduce clarity: “sturdents” and “Japnese” are misspelled, while “weekdays” does not accurately describe the chart’s focus on how students divide a typical weekday. “How much time pupils sleep, study and relax” is also an awkward way to introduce the categories. Use precise chart language such as “hours spent sleeping” and “time devoted to studying”, and vary “students” with “learners” only where it sounds natural. Accurate spelling and more specific terms would strengthen the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The response attempts a few simple sentence forms, including “The bar chart illustrates…” and a sentence identifying the countries and activities. However, grammatical control is weak in the overview: “overall bar charts gives information” has an article and subject–verb agreement problem, and “How much time pupils sleep, study and relax” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. The final phrase, “Uk learners spend”, is also unfinished, so its intended meaning is not expressed. Most of the response relies on short, basic structures, with little variety. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, for example, “The chart shows how many hours students in each country spend sleeping, studying and relaxing.”
