IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart shows the typical weekday for students in three different countries.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The above chart illustrates the information about weekdays for students in three countries.
In UK, students activities on weekend was almost same compared wih other countries. Students given proper time to all activities whether it is studying or relaxing. This make them punctual related to their daily routine as well as for their schedule.
In Japan, students prefer more time for their study and given less time to other two activities. Japanese students persue more knowledge in their field of study. This also makes them more intelligent in their study.
In Germany, students balanced their routine according to their own style and given almost equal weightage to their studies. They also active regarding their enjoyment style as I can take example I have read on internet that german people do fun on sunday, on this day there were totally silent. This was rule in Germany.
Overall, it is clearly visible that people in the Japan study more comapred with other countries shown in chart. This shows a major difference in chart.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main broad contrast: Japanese students spend the most time studying, while their time relaxing is lower. However, the response only partially reports the chart. It gives no accurate figures and makes unsupported claims about punctuality, intelligence, and German Sunday customs, which are not shown in the data. Some comparisons are also misleading: the UK and Germany have similar relaxing time, but the chart shows different study and sleep figures; describing all UK activities as “almost same” is unclear. To strengthen the report, select the key comparisons and state them precisely—for example, Japan studies for 13 hours, compared with 8 in the UK and 9 in Germany, while Japan relaxes for 4 hours versus 7 in the other two countries. Avoid explanations or personal examples not supported by the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic structure, with separate paragraphs for each country and a final overall statement, so the reader can follow its general topic. However, the country-by-country sequence does not build a clear comparison of the chart’s main features, and the overview comes only at the end. Several sentences move away from the data, particularly the discussion of German Sunday customs, interrupting the progression. Linking is also limited and sometimes repetitive, with repeated openings such as “In Japan” and “In Germany,” while references such as “This shows a major difference” do not specify which difference. Organise the report around the main contrasts, introduce an overview near the beginning, and use clear comparisons to connect the figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “studying,” “relaxing,” “activities,” and “daily routine,” which makes the general subject understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “given proper time,” “equal weightage,” and “active regarding their enjoyment style.” There are also spelling errors, including “comapred” and “persue,” and “weekend” is an inaccurate label because the chart concerns a typical weekday. These choices sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to interpret. Build a more precise vocabulary for describing charts, such as “spend,” “account for,” “higher/lower,” and “approximately,” and check spelling and collocations before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response relies mainly on simple statements and attempts a few longer structures, but control is inconsistent. Errors occur frequently in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction: “This make them punctual” should be “This makes them punctual,” while “students activities on weekend was” has problems with both the possessive/plural structure and verb agreement. The sentence beginning “as I can take example” is also difficult to follow, and “on this day there were totally silent” lacks a clear grammatical subject. These errors can make parts of the message hard to understand. Practise accurate simple comparisons first, then add controlled complex sentences using forms such as “whereas” and “compared with.”
