IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart shows the typical weekday for students in three different countries.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart explains the usual weekday work for students living in three different countries including UK, Japan, and Germany.
Overall, the students living in Japan are mostly engaged in studies throughout the day, while those living in the UK spend least of their time in studies among all three countries. On the other hand, Japanies students spend the least time for relaxation, while other two countries contribute the same percentage for rest.
In Britian, students spend 8.5 hours for studies, 8 hours of their time is devoted for studies, and 7 hours for relaxing. On the contrary, 13 hours are spent by Japanies students for studies, that is highest time spent among all the three countries. They spend 7 hours for sleeping, and least time is spent by them for relaxation, that is 4 hours only. 9 hours are spent for studies, 8 hours for sleeping, and 7 hours for rest by German students.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main contrast: Japanese students spend the most time studying and the least relaxing, while the UK and Germany have equal relaxation figures. The overview is relevant, and most reported figures match the chart. However, the UK figures are confused: you first say students spend 8.5 hours “for studies,” although 8.5 is sleeping; the chart shows 8 hours studying. This makes one key detail inaccurate. The overview also says UK students spend the least time studying, but Germany’s 9 hours is higher than the UK’s 8, so this comparison is correct; it would be clearer to state the figures directly. Develop the comparison across all three countries more precisely and check each category before reporting it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement, with an introductory sentence, an overview, and a paragraph of country-specific details. The information generally progresses from the broad pattern to individual figures, and linking phrases such as “Overall” and “On the other hand” help signal relationships. However, the final paragraph is difficult to follow because the UK figures are repeated or mislabelled, and the transition “On the contrary” does not clearly connect the UK and Japan comparisons. The long final paragraph would be easier to navigate if you grouped the figures by activity or used separate, parallel sentences for each country. Check spacing after punctuation as well, since “relaxing. On” interrupts the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “devoted,” “engaged in studies,” and “relaxation,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing chart data. “Work” in the introduction is less precise than “daily activities,” while “contribute the same percentage for rest” incorrectly suggests percentages rather than hours. “Japanies” and “Britian” are misspellings, and “spend least of their time” is an awkward phrase. Repeated use of “spend” and “hours” also limits variety. Aim for precise collocations such as “spend eight hours studying” and “allocate time to relaxation,” and use the country names in their correct forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex structures, including the contrast introduced by “while” and the clause beginning “that is highest time spent.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical choices are inaccurate. For example, “students spend 8.5 hours for studies” has an awkward preposition pattern, and “that is highest time spent” is missing an article and is not well formed. In “8 hours of their time is devoted,” the singular verb does not agree naturally with the plural measure. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with a missing space after the full stop in “relaxing.On.” Practise accurate comparative clauses and parallel sentence patterns while retaining the range of structures you already attempt.
