Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You identify the chart’s general subject and attempt an overview, noting that studying is prominent in Japan and Germany and that relaxing is comparatively low in Japan. However, the overview is partly inaccurate: studying is the largest activity in Japan, but in Germany sleeping (8 hours) is lower than studying (9), while in the UK sleeping (8.5) is only slightly above studying (8). The response gives no figures and omits most comparisons among the three activities and countries, so the key features are not adequately reported. It is also substantially below the required 150 words. To improve, include a clear overview and support it with accurate figures for each country and direct comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic two-part structure: an opening sentence identifies the chart, followed by an overview beginning with “Overall”. This gives the reader a simple starting point, but the ideas are too limited to form a developed report, and the second sentence combines several comparisons without making their relationships clear. For example, “Student spend more time studying and least time relaxing” does not specify which country or activity is being compared. Build separate paragraphs for the overview and the detailed comparisons, and use clear links such as “whereas” or “by contrast” to show how the figures differ. More complete sequencing would make the report easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use a small set of relevant terms, including “bar chart”, “typical”, “sleeping”, “studying” and “relaxing”, so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the vocabulary is very limited and several spelling errors reduce accuracy: “contries”, “studing” and “tow”. Some phrasing is also imprecise, such as “typical workday” when the chart describes a typical weekday, and “Student spend more time” does not clearly identify the comparison. Use accurate activity and comparison language, such as “hours spent studying” and “the highest figure”. Check spelling carefully and vary the wording used to describe amounts and differences.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response uses simple sentence forms, including “The bar chart illustrates…” and an overview introduced by “Overall”. These are understandable, but the range is narrow and errors in basic sentence construction are evident. In “Student spend more time”, the singular subject requires “spends”, or you could write “Students spend”. The phrase “while in Uk sleeping is slightly higher” also needs clearer sentence structure and an article or possessive construction, such as “while sleeping takes slightly longer in the UK”. The final sentence is difficult to interpret because its comparisons are not grammatically connected clearly. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and build longer comparison sentences with controlled clauses.
