Student answer (Band 6.0)

Smoking can cause serious health issues and it should not be allowed to smoke legally. I strongly agree with this statement. Smoking causes life threatning illnesses that affects the individual directly. Furthermore, smoking is not illegal and that is why the individuals who don't smoke are getting affected.

First of all, people who smoke regularly may get diagnosed with serious health problems. For instance, lung cancer is one of the main illness smokers diagnosed with. Eventually the illness shortens their life span. This creates burden on family members financially and emotionally. So, the smokers not only responsible for their own damages but also harm their sorroundings.

Moreover, smoking is legal in most of the countries. Some countries have strict restriction on public smoking. But people does not care about this type of small law or restriction and creates hazardous environment for others who don't smoke. For instance, people who don't smoke but stay near the smokers or roam around with them have higher risk of getting lung cancer too. People can't ignore a smoker while they are smoking because most of them are relative or close one. If smoking made illegal like drugs than individuals may smoke privately and they will have the fear of getting caught.

To conclude, I strongly believe smoking creates health issues like life threatning lung cancer and it should not be legal in any because it affects other. Therefore, law makers should considers the bbigger scenario and make smoking illegal in both public and private space. Because it not only hurting that individuals it also creates serious issues for others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I strongly agree”) and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address both the health risks to smokers and the effects on non-smokers, with relevant examples such as lung cancer and the burden on family members. This covers the main parts of the question. However, some points are less fully developed: the claim that making smoking illegal would lead people to smoke privately is asserted rather than explained, and the comparison with illegal drugs needs more careful support. The essay also focuses mainly on health consequences, with limited consideration of practical implications or counterarguments. To strengthen the response, explain how prohibition would reduce harm and support each main claim with clearer reasoning or a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted by “First of all” and “Moreover,” and a conclusion. The ideas generally progress from harm to smokers to harm to others, which helps the reader follow your argument. Some linking is mechanical, however, and connections between claims are occasionally unclear. For example, “So, the smokers not only responsible for their own damages but also harm their sorroundings” moves quickly from family costs to harm to others without fully explaining the link. The final paragraph repeats earlier points rather than drawing them together. Use referencing and transitions more precisely, and organise each body paragraph around one main claim followed by explanation and evidence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “serious health problems,” “lung cancer,” “financially and emotionally,” and “hazardous environment.” These choices make your main ideas understandable, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors are noticeable: “life threatning,” “main illness,” “sorroundings,” and “bbigger scenario.” Phrases such as “own damages” and “close one” are also unnatural in this context. These slips do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument, but they reduce precision and fluency. Build a bank of accurate health and policy collocations, and proofread spelling and word forms before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple sentences and some longer structures, including clauses introduced by “because” and “who,” so there is an attempt to vary sentence form. The main message remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the individuals who don't smoke are getting affected” has an awkward passive construction, while “people does not care” and “law makers should considers” show subject–verb agreement problems. In “smoking creates health issues … and it should not be legal in any,” the final phrase is incomplete, and “Because it not only hurting” is a sentence fragment with an incorrect verb form. Work on agreement, complete sentence construction, and accurate verb forms, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
