Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You state a clear position in the introduction and conclusion: you agree that smoking should be illegal. The response gives relevant reasons, including illness, public costs, unpleasant effects in shared spaces, and environmental harm, and the Jordan hospital-cost example adds some support. However, the task is only partially addressed because the reasons are mostly asserted rather than explained; for example, the link between smoking and cancer is unclear, and the economic comparison needs context or evidence. The conclusion also lists points without developing the argument. The response is 13 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to explain and support your ideas. Develop each main reason with a clear explanation and a specific, credible example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The paragraphs broadly group health and economic arguments, and signposts such as “In addition,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help show the intended direction. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow. The second body paragraph moves from smell to environmental effects and then to government income and hospital costs without clearly explaining how these points connect. Some linking phrases are also used mechanically or inaccurately, and punctuation spacing and capitalisation are inconsistent. Organise each paragraph around one central claim, then explain it and give an example; use transitions only where they express the actual relationship between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “serious health problem,” “chemical process,” “environment,” “economy” and “responsibility.” This gives the response a basic range for discussing smoking and its effects. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are frequent enough to make some phrases difficult to understand, as in “proplem,” “recognaise,” “cance hosspital” and “cancer reovary.” Several expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “activate the cancers cells” and “the budget of cancer recovery.” Aim to learn accurate topic collocations and check spelling carefully. Prefer clear, familiar wording when unsure, and use a dictionary to confirm both the meaning and grammatical form of less familiar terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a clause beginning “although” and a contrast introduced by “while.” However, the range remains limited, and complex attempts often contain errors that make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “smoking can lead the body to activate the cancers cells” has an unclear grammatical structure, while “most of country they add a warning” has problems with sentence construction and agreement. Articles, plurals, verb forms and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “the smoking,” “people understand” and the comma splice in “that’s means that will not affect.” Practise building accurate subject–verb–object sentences first, then add one subordinate clause at a time. Proofread for articles, agreement and sentence boundaries.
