IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal.

To what extent do you agree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

I completely disagree with the statement that smoking should be banned so that it becomes difficult to get it. The reasons are that it helps government to receive good amount of money from tax, which helps grow the economy.

Cigerates helps creating lots of employment in an economy, reducing unemployment rate. From farming weeds to process and sell it to the final consumer requires large amount of workforces, contributing their income to the economy. For instance, in our village individuals mostly rely on the weeds farming , if crops grow well people get higher profit, increasing living standard . Moreover, government in our country the highest amount of tax from tobacco companies, aiding government to invest those money in infrastructure and education. For example,it costs only 3 tk to produce a single stick of a cigerate box ,however, it sells around 12 tk per stick, leaving almost 8 tk for government as tax.

Even though it causes many diseases , tobacco companies are not responsibke for it because they do not promote it rather they level the awarenes message in the front of cigerate boxes. People choose this by themseleves and smoke it with the intention to reduce stress or suffering. I personally feel that it actually reduces pressure during my exam time. For example, when I study really hard non stop for 6-7 hours, smoking assists allevating my stress.

Overall, it actually detrimental for human but beneficial for government to receive tax and spned those money to education sector.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you disagree with making smoking illegal, and you give reasons involving tax revenue, employment and personal choice. The examples about tobacco farming and tax provide some support, and you acknowledge that smoking causes disease. However, the response only partially develops the argument. The economic benefits are repeated in the conclusion, while the claim that tobacco companies are not responsible because they display warnings is asserted rather than examined. Your personal example about smoking during exams is relevant to your view, but it does not address the wider health consequences or explain why these outweigh the case for prohibition. Develop both sides more carefully and make your final position consistent with the points discussed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure: economic arguments are grouped together, followed by health, responsibility and personal experience, then a conclusion. Connectors such as “Moreover,” “Even though” and “Overall” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression is limited, and some links are unclear or mechanical. The first paragraph introduces tax and then employment, while the next combines farming, tax figures and government spending without a clear sequence. The conclusion repeats the tax point but does not bring together the main reasoning or resolve the tension between calling smoking detrimental and opposing a ban. Organise each body paragraph around one main claim, explain it in sequence, and use clear references to avoid ambiguity.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “unemployment rate,” “infrastructure,” “education” and “reduce stress,” which helps communicate the main ideas. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “weeds farming” appears to mean tobacco farming, and “level the awarenes message” does not clearly express that companies display health warnings. There are also frequent spelling and word-form errors, such as “Cigerates,” “responsibke,” “allevating” and “spned.” These issues weaken precision and reader confidence. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for discussing taxation, employment, health risks and regulation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a concession beginning “Even though it causes many diseases” and a conditional example about crops growing well. However, the range is limited, and complex structures are often faulty. Errors in agreement and verb forms appear in “Cigerates helps creating” and “it actually detrimental”; articles and sentence construction are also problematic in “helps government to receive good amount of money.” Some long sentences join several ideas without clear grammatical control, as in the sentence about farming, processing and selling tobacco. These errors occur frequently and can make relationships between ideas harder to understand. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles and complete sentence patterns, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
