Student answer (Band 6.0)

Smoking is a serious problrm because it can damage people´s health and affect those around them. I largley agree that it should be made illegal, althogh complete ban would be difficult to introduce.

The main reason is that, smoking can cause several dangerous desease, including lung cancer and heart problems. People who smoke for many year may become serious ill and need expensive medical treatment. In addition, smoking does not only harm smoker. People in nearly even if they do not smoke, they may affect too. For example, Children who live with smokers that cause harmful for their health everyday, even though they have never touched a cigeratte.

However, making smoking completely illegal may create some problems. Some people are strongly addicted to nicotine, so they may continue smoking secretly or buy cigarettes illegally. This could lead to an increase in illegal sales. Instead of only punishing smokers, government should help them give up the habit. They can provide free advice, also they can arrange compaign about the harmful sides of smoking. They should also make cigeratte expensive, stop advertising them and prevent shops to sailing them to young people. Parks, Restaurant and working authority should protect their places by creating smoke free areas. Individuals in society can make some rules about smoking. For instance, they can create some rules for their areas that no one can smoke there. If someone do this, they can charge them fine or give other minor punishement.

In conclusion, I agree that smoking should be controlled very strictly because it harms both smokers and other peoples. However i believe that education, strong rules and support for people who want to quit would be more effective tp orevent smoking.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you largely agree with making smoking illegal, while recognising that a complete ban could be difficult. You address both the harms of smoking and the practical limits of prohibition, and the examples of illness and children exposed to second-hand smoke are relevant. The discussion of support, restrictions on advertising, and smoke-free areas also gives the response useful breadth. Some points, however, are less fully explained: for example, the possible growth of illegal sales is mentioned but not explored, and the final point about individuals making local rules is unclear. To strengthen the response, develop fewer proposals in more detail and explain how they support your qualified position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs present reasons and qualifications, and the conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “In addition,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help signal the main stages of the argument. At times, though, the progression within the second body paragraph becomes list-like, as several measures are added without clear grouping. The shift from government support to rules made by individuals also weakens the paragraph’s focus, and “If someone do this” has an unclear reference. Group related measures together and use clearer references to show how each point connects to the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “nicotine,” “addicted,” “illegal sales,” “medical treatment,” and “smoke-free areas,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “harmful sides of smoking.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable, including “problrm,” “desease,” “cigeratte,” and “sailing them,” and some expressions are not natural in context, such as “people in nearly even if they do not smoke.” These sometimes make the reader work to understand your meaning. Check spelling carefully and build accuracy with common collocations, for example, “suffer from serious illnesses” and “prevent shops from selling cigarettes to young people.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including a concession in “although a complete ban would be difficult to introduce” and a conditional example beginning “If someone…”. The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. Examples include “People who smoke for many year may become serious ill,” where plural and adverb forms are needed, and “People in nearly even if they do not smoke, they may affect too,” which has an incomplete and confusing structure. There are also errors in articles, agreement, and sentence construction, such as “government should help them give up the habit” and “If someone do this.” Practise accurate clause formation and agreement, then proofread each sentence for complete structure and correct verb forms.
