Student answer (Band 6.0)

Consumption of cigarettes is increasing day by day. In this modern era smoking is widely recognized as one of the leading cause of preventable disease. This should be made prohibited by the government. I will discuss about this in the upcoming paragraphs.

On the one hand, inhaling the drugs can result into dangerous disorder, while nowadays people do smoking to release their stress of work and jobs. But some do this because they are addicted to this if they don't smoke they can't suffer. But regular consumption of cigarettes will damage the lungs and can start mouth cancer which leads to the death of human. Furthermore, second-hand smoke can seriously affect non-smokers, especially children and elderly people.

On the other hand, making smoking illegal may create more problems than it solves. Instead of making it illegal government should focus on stricter regulations and public education.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 145 words. Consequently, the development of ideas is severely limited. While you introduce the topic and state a position, the arguments are underdeveloped. For instance, you mention that smoking causes 'dangerous disorder' and 'mouth cancer' but do not elaborate on these points to provide a fully supported argument. The conclusion is also missing, as the essay ends abruptly after the second body paragraph. To improve, you must expand your points with specific examples, explanations, and a clear conclusion to ensure all parts of the task are fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand' to signal shifts in your argument. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by the lack of length and depth. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'if they don't smoke they can't suffer', where the meaning is ambiguous. To achieve a higher band, ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that ideas flow logically from one to the next with more sophisticated linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, though it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use some relevant topic-specific vocabulary like 'preventable disease', 'second-hand smoke', and 'addicted'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'inhaling the drugs' (which is not the standard term for smoking cigarettes) and 'result into dangerous disorder' (should be 'result in dangerous disorders'). To improve, focus on learning more precise collocations and academic vocabulary related to health and policy to express your ideas with greater clarity and sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'one of the leading cause' (should be 'causes'), 'people do smoking' (should be 'people smoke'), and 'they can't suffer' (which does not convey the intended meaning of withdrawal symptoms). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure is often repetitive. To improve, work on using a wider variety of complex sentence forms, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, and pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms.
