Student answer (Band 6.5)

Now a days, more and more people especially youth have started smoking as a result of excessive stress and anxiety issues. However they are not aware of its consequences on health. In the following paragraph i will discuss why it should be illegal.

First and foremost, "smoking is injurious to health" clamed by cigarette manufactures and it is also mention on packaging still people consume it on daily basis. As a result of chain smoking, our lungs become week and damaged causing improper breathing. Additionally, it can lead to serios health illnesses like cancer or permanent damage to lungs. These illnesses are not completely curable and also its treatment can be very heavy on our pockets. Recently there was a news on television about a young boy who was chainsmoker and how he and his family had been dealing it since long time and at last he was no more.

Secondly, smoking not only damages lungs but also other organ systems that leads to multiple diseases conditions for example heart attack along with cancer. However the cause of illnesses depends on type of cigarette used for example low quality one can cause fast damage compare to better one.

Lastly, smoking should be completely be ban by the government by making it illegal and fining those who smoke in public. Furthermore the authorities should take strict actions against the manufacturer as well as consumer. They must carry out campaigns regarding this in schools and in public places. People must have self awareness regarding its moderate use in front of young generations. I believe that such actions can only be undertake by the combine efforts of both government and citizens.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that smoking should be illegal. The ideas are relevant, such as the health risks and the role of government intervention. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The second paragraph relies on a personal anecdote that is not fully integrated into a broader argument, and the third paragraph introduces the idea of 'low quality' cigarettes, which is a bit tangential to the main argument about illegality. To reach a higher band, ensure that every point directly supports the central thesis and provides more analytical depth rather than just listing consequences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First and foremost', 'Additionally', and 'Lastly', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'dealing it since long time'. Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between the paragraphs could be smoother to create a more cohesive argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several spelling errors ('clamed', 'serios', 'chainsmoker') and word choice issues ('heavy on our pockets', 'fast damage'). While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'consequences' and 'authorities', the range is limited. To improve, the student should focus on using more academic collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of key terms. The current range is sufficient to convey meaning, but the errors occasionally draw attention.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'Now a days', 'smoking should be completely be ban', and 'actions can only be undertake'. Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are inconsistent. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like verb forms and articles would significantly improve the score.
