Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this modern era, it is believed that smoking is quite dangerous for health so it should be banned or made illegal so people will not use this. In this essay, I will discuss the reasons of banning smoking.

To begin with, one of the major reason of banning smoking is health. For instance, the people who smokes are clearly have more chances of having lung cancer and heart disease if government will ban this not only active but also in passive smokers the health risks can decrease. Moreover, while getting treatment of cancer and heart conditions its cost is quite expensive, not everyone can afford that. Even in some cases the patient have to shift to another country for better treatment. As a result, poor people have to suffer more and there are high chances that they can risk their loved ones life.

On the other hand, if smoking will be made illegal very few or no one from young generation will try smoking in society. Which will also benefit the public areas as there will be no waste of cigarette buds. As those areas will be litter free form cigarette buds and more cleaned. Furthermore, by banning smoking the government can also benefit from it as they do not have to spend their money on people with smoking effects. Many people use cigarette as they think it will help them to reduce stress which is 100% wrong in terms of science. If people have more knowledge about its risk they can prevent themselves from smoking.

To conclude, although smoking have many negative effects on health but banning it is not only the solution as if people have more formation about its risks they can benefit themselves from it

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the health and social benefits of banning smoking. However, the position is not consistently maintained. While the introduction suggests a ban is necessary, the conclusion contradicts this by stating that 'banning it is not only the solution,' which weakens the overall argument. The ideas are relevant, such as the cost of medical treatment and the impact on the younger generation, but some points are under-developed. For example, the mention of 'passive smokers' is a strong point, but it is not fully explored. To improve, ensure your conclusion aligns with your introduction and provide more detailed explanations for each supporting point.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Moreover,' and 'Furthermore' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Which will also benefit the public areas' starting a new sentence. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between ideas could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be strengthened by ensuring each sentence clearly builds upon the previous one to create a more cohesive argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'smoking,' 'banning,' and 'health.' Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'more formation' instead of 'more information' or 'cleaned' instead of 'cleaner.' While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific terminology related to public health and policy, and focus on using words in their correct grammatical form.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the people who smokes are clearly have'), incorrect verb tenses ('if government will ban'), and awkward phrasing ('the patient have to shift'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the errors do not completely prevent understanding, they are frequent enough to affect the overall quality of the writing. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the accuracy.
