Student answer (Band 6.5)

As many people in our surrounding are smoking all the time not only in our area but in the whole country and all around world so its a worldwide issue and I fully agree with the statement that smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal.

firstly, the most important thing that it should be made illegal because it starts effecting the vital part of our body which is lung as the time passes one who is smoking get lung disease and it may lead to cancer. As my uncle died due to damage of lung membrane as the lung cells ruptured in the whole body as he smoked his whole life.the doctors also tried to save him but in vain.

In addition , smoking disturbs the respiratory system of the body which causes shortage of breath.According to a recent research the smoke of the cigarette contains 3000 carcinogens which effects not only lungs but each part of the body causing all the death causing diseases.

Secondly, smoking not only effects the person who is smoking but also the one who is sitting beside him.In biological terms its also called as passive smoking in which the person nearer to the smoker is effected more then the smoker as he is inhaling all the toxins in smoke and also scientists had discovered that passive smoking is more dangerous.

Conclusively , in my opinion nothing is important then a human health so smoking should be made illegal so that people may leave this habit so that everyone in the world can live a normal life free of diseases and problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of banning smoking. The ideas are relevant, focusing on health risks and the impact of passive smoking. However, the development is somewhat limited. While the personal example of an uncle is provided, the argument could be strengthened by discussing the broader societal or economic implications of a ban, rather than focusing solely on medical consequences. The conclusion is clear, but the overall development remains at a Band 6 level as it relies heavily on general assertions rather than a more nuanced exploration of the 'extent' of the agreement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'firstly', 'in addition', 'secondly', and 'conclusively'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. There are also issues with sentence-level cohesion, such as the run-on sentence in the introduction ('...all around world so its a worldwide issue and I fully agree...'). While the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, the lack of sophisticated linking between sentences keeps this at a Band 6 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'smoking', 'illegal', and 'body'. The student attempts some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'carcinogens' and 'respiratory system', which is positive. However, there are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'death causing diseases' instead of 'life-threatening illnesses' and 'nothing is important then a human health' instead of 'nothing is more important than human health'. These errors do not impede communication but demonstrate a limited range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in punctuation (missing spaces after commas, missing full stops), subject-verb agreement ('one who is smoking get'), and article usage ('the lung', 'the whole body'). The misuse of 'effects' (verb) instead of 'affects' (verb) occurs multiple times. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of grammatical slips and punctuation errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The student should focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors.
