Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern era, people prefer to consume drugs in order to reduce their stress which leads to various diseases and the consumption should be restricted by the authorities. I largely agree with this statement and will provide the reasons behind that in the following paragraphs.

Smoking should be banned by the authorities to eradicate the criminal offence in the country. After the excessive consumption of drugs the individuals loose their sense to differentiate between right and wrong. So, they start performing the activities that are unethical such as sexual assaults, rape and many more. These activities affect the women safety in the society. Additionally, the drug addicts start performing illegal activities like robberies to get money for purchasing drugs and satisfy their needs.

Restriction of drugs could also help in the growth and development of the country. If the drugs are banned then the people would be be able to access then which would gradually help them to eradicate this bad habit. Further, they will protect themself from dangerous diseases like cancer which will ultimately help them to save the amount that they were going to pay for their treatment. Moreover, this amount could be used for providing better education to their children which in future benefits the society. It would also help to support the families that suffer from these issues and will prevent them from loosing their loved ones.

To conclude, it can be said that smoking should be restricted by the authorities for the development of country and to reduce the number of crimes happening in the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the topic but suffers from a significant misunderstanding of the prompt. The task asks about 'smoking', yet the essay focuses almost exclusively on 'drugs' and 'drug addiction'. While the student attempts to link these, the argument is largely off-topic as it conflates tobacco use with illegal narcotics. The position is clear, but the development of ideas is hampered by this misinterpretation. To improve, ensure you address the specific subject mentioned in the prompt rather than substituting it with a different topic. The ideas presented, such as the link between substance use and crime, are relevant to the broader theme of addiction but do not directly answer the prompt regarding smoking.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Additionally', 'Further', 'Moreover'). Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the transition between the topic of drugs and the benefits of banning them feels abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus would enhance the overall flow and coherence of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'loose' instead of 'lose' and 'the amount that they were going to pay' which is wordy and unnatural. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic terms like 'bad habit' and 'dangerous diseases'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific terminology related to public health and policy, while ensuring that words are used in their correct context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the people would be be able to access then' (typos and incorrect pronoun usage) and 'protect themself' (should be 'themselves'). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are also inconsistent throughout the text. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and diversifying sentence structures would be beneficial.
