Student answer (Band 6.5)

In contemporary society, the younger generation have a habit of smoking. Some people content smoking can lead to serious illnesses and should be banned and made illegal. Therefore people protect from harmful effect. I partially agree with this statement and relevant examples will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

To begin with, a smoking activity should be banned because there are substantial drawbacks. First and foremost, smoking can cause chronic diseases like asthma which is very dangerous disease and also it contains tabacco so it can lead to cancer also. For instance, person who smoke have higher changes of cancer and asthma because of frequent exposure. In addition, passive smoking also can increase serious illnesses, thus who are not smoking but stand near to the smoker, it can equally damage to non-smoker people.

Conversely, smoking is personal choice and habit, hence some people believe that smoking should not be made illegal. Firstly, a smoker cannot easily quit smoking if they suddenly stop smoking, it could cause adverse effects which is more chronic than disease. For example, a person who has smoked two packs of cigarettes every day for 20 years may experience intense headaches, mood swings, difficulty concentrating, and severe cravings after quitting suddenly. Moreover, person have a own rights and it contains nicotine. Therefore, it works as stress relief and feel relaxed.

To sum up, although smoking is personal choice, it has more drawbacks and negative development. I believe that, smoking should be completely banned because it have more negative effects.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout, which is partially agree. The ideas are relevant, such as the health risks of smoking and the personal freedom argument. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the point about nicotine as a stress reliever is mentioned but not fully explored in the context of the debate on legality. To reach a higher band, you should provide more depth in your reasoning and ensure that the conclusion aligns consistently with the arguments presented, as the final sentence contradicts your earlier 'partially agree' stance by stating it should be 'completely banned'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Conversely', and 'To sum up' to signal the progression of your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as 'Therefore people protect from harmful effect' in the introduction, which lacks a clear logical link to the previous sentence. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as 'it' in 'it contains tabacco', where the antecedent is not explicitly stated. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words will enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'chronic diseases', 'passive smoking', and 'adverse effects'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'smoking activity', 'higher changes of cancer' (instead of 'chances'), and 'negative development' (which is not the correct collocation here). To improve, focus on learning collocations and using more sophisticated vocabulary to express your ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'smoking... have more negative effects'), article usage (e.g., 'person who smoke'), and missing prepositions. Some sentences are also structurally awkward, such as 'thus who are not smoking but stand near to the smoker, it can equally damage to non-smoker people'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb and pluralization errors.
