Student answer (Band 7.0)

In contemporary society, the younger generation has a habit of smoking. Some people contend smoking can lead to serious illnesses and should be banned and made illegal. Therefore people should protect from harmful effect. I partially agree with this statement and relevant examples will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

To begin with, a smoking activity should be banned because there are substantial drawbacks. First and foremost, smoking can cause chronic diseases like asthma which is a very dangerous disease and also it contains tabacco so it can lead to cancer also. For instance, a person who smokes have higher changes of cancer and asthma because of frequent exposure. In addition, passive smoking also can increase serious illnesses, thus who are not smoking but stand near to the smoker, it can equally damage to non-smoker people.

Conversely, smoking is personal choice and habit, hence some people believe that smoking should not be made illegal. Firstly, a smoker cannot easily quit smoking if they suddenly stop smoking, it could cause adverse effects which is more chronic than disease. For example, a person who has smoked two packs of cigarettes every day for 20 years may experience intense headaches, mood swings, difficulty concentrating, and severe cravings after quitting suddenly. Moreover, it creates illegal markets if government banned smoking and habitual smokers give a high pay for illegal products.

To sum up, although smoking is personal choice, it has more drawbacks and negative development. I believe that, smoking should be completely banned because passive smoking is a very harmful and causes chronic diseases.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing arguments for both sides of the issue. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout, concluding with a firm stance. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point regarding 'illegal markets' is a strong argument but is not fully explored or linked back to the broader societal impact. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is expanded with more depth and nuance rather than just listing consequences. Overall, the response is relevant and stays on topic throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'First and foremost', 'In addition', and 'Conversely' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and some transitions feel repetitive. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing; for example, in the second paragraph, the phrase 'thus who are not smoking' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between complex ideas would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contemporary society', 'chronic diseases', and 'adverse effects'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'a smoking activity' (should be 'smoking') and 'high pay for illegal products' (should be 'pay high prices'). There is also a spelling error ('tabacco' instead of 'tobacco'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, the control is not always consistent. To improve, focus on using collocations more naturally and proofreading for spelling errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use some complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a smoking activity'), subject-verb agreement ('a person who smokes have higher changes'), and sentence fragments or run-on sentences ('thus who are not smoking but stand near to the smoker, it can equally damage to non-smoker people'). These errors occasionally cause the reader to pause but do not completely impede communication. Increasing your control over complex structures and refining your grasp of basic grammar rules will help improve your score.
