Student answer (Band 6.5)

Smoking is detrimental to health and it cause serious health problems. So, it should be banned . I strongly agree with the statement because smoking lead to serious illnesses and non smokers suffers from many diseases due to smoker.

The main reason for my disagreement is that it can cause lot of health problems which will even lead to death of smoker . The person who smoke regularly inhale a lot of toxins such as nicotine. As a result they suffer from respiratory diseases . They even become prone to oral cancer and lung cancer due to their this habit of smoking . For instance, WHO's data shows that millions of people are suffering from oral and lung Cancer because of their habit of smoking. Thus smoking should be banned and government should take strict action against the shopkeeper who sell cigrates.

The another reason for my disagreement is suffering of non smokers because of passive smoking. The person who live with a smoker is inhaling a lot of toxins without knowing . Which will damage their respiratory system even more than the smoking . Furthermore, it will lead them to diseases like asthma. Also it will lead into the family suffering. If person became prone to diseases then as a result his family suffers financially and emotionally. For instance, government data shows that mostly children and pregnant women became victims of second hand smoking . So it ought to be prohibited.

To conclude, smoking is dangerous to health and it should not be legal because it cause serious problems like oral cancer, lung cancer and asthma . In addition, many children and women suffers from passive smoking because of smokers .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The main ideas—health risks to the smoker and the impact of passive smoking—are relevant and directly address the prompt. However, there is a significant logical error in your second paragraph where you state, 'The main reason for my disagreement is that it can cause lot of health problems.' Since you are arguing in favor of a ban, this should be a reason for your agreement. Despite this confusion, the overall argument is well-supported with examples like WHO data and the impact on families, meeting the requirements for a clear position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. You use cohesive devices such as 'As a result,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In addition' to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or misused, such as 'The another reason,' which is grammatically incorrect. Additionally, the flow between sentences is sometimes interrupted by repetitive phrasing. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, the paragraphing and linking could be more sophisticated to achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'respiratory diseases,' 'toxins,' and 'financially and emotionally.' However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'the person who smoke' (should be 'smokes') and 'due to their this habit.' You also rely on some repetitive vocabulary. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure that your word forms (singular/plural) are consistent with the subject of your sentences.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it cause' instead of 'it causes,' 'non smokers suffers' instead of 'non-smokers suffer') and article usage. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. Increasing your control over basic grammatical rules will significantly improve your score.
