Student answer (Band 7.0)

In today's era smoking is the biggest problem due to its detrimental effects specially on lungs. Many people agree that this should be made illegal to prevent serious illness. I strongly agree with this statement and i will discuss my perspectives in upcoming paragraphs.

Firstly, smoking is a leading cause of various health illnesses such as lung cancer, respiratory, and heart disease. This is not only effecting smokers but also pose a significant burden on healthcare system. By making the smoking illegal, the number of people affected by these illnesses could get reduced ultimately lessening the satins on healthcare system.

Moreover, smoking not only harm the individuals, but also those around the second-hand Smoke. Non-smokers including children, and elderly individuals are at risk of developing health issues because of exposure to second-hand smokers. Therefore, banning smoking would not only protect smokers from the harmful effects of tobacco but also safeguard the health of non-smokers.

Furthermore, making smoking illegal could lead to a decrease in the number of new smokers, particularly among the younger population. By implementing strict laws and regulations, the accessibility and attractiveness of smoking could be diminished, thus preventing future generations from falling into the trap of this addictive habit.

In conclusion, the detrimental health effects of smoking and its impact on individuals and society as a whole make a compelling case for it to be made illegal. By taking this step, the prevalence of smoking-related illnesses could be reduced, protecting both smokers and non-smokers from the harmful effects of tobacco.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. Each paragraph introduces a relevant supporting argument, such as the burden on healthcare, the impact of second-hand smoke, and the prevention of new smokers. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. To reach a higher band, ensure that you provide more specific examples or evidence to support your claims, as some points remain somewhat general. However, you have addressed all parts of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through your arguments. While the progression is clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, ensure that referencing is precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'the satins' is unclear and likely a misuse of a cohesive reference. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'detrimental effects', 'significant burden', and 'compelling case' are used appropriately. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'lessening the satins' (likely meant 'strains') and 'second-hand smokers' (should be 'second-hand smoke'). These errors do not impede communication but prevent a higher score. Expanding your use of less common lexical items and focusing on precise collocations would improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'making the smoking illegal' (unnecessary article), 'is not only effecting' (should be 'affecting'), and 'i will discuss' (capitalization). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your arguments. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move toward a higher band.
