Student answer (Band 6.5)
it is undeniable that smoking tobacoo leads to life threatening diseases for both the person smoking and the bystanders. While some people would say that evryone has the freedom to smoke, i agree that smoking should be illegal due to the health consequences and burden on the health care system
The main reason that tobacoo should be banned is the impact it has on the health of a person, smoking is directly related to many disease such as lung cancer, heart disease and breathing issues but the risk in not jus for smokers alone bystanders are also effected for this, it forces then to inhale toxic chemicals that can lead to health risks and example can inclue a child raised in a smokers household can have a chance of getting asthma
another reason is that it puts a strain on the health care system. governments have be donating millions on dollars for research and treating diseases caused by smoking, even when government impose Pigouvian tax it will not stop people form bying and smoking most people will likely go for the cheaper priced cigarettes and so people will not be stopped from smoking.
many contries have made special rooms for people to go and smoke so it dose not effect the bystanders but this does not ultimaly stop people from smoking and just reduces the effects caused to other people and the enviroment there are ultmalty 2 options for the goverment, the first would be to completley make smoking illegal in public and private areas, the second reason would be to impose a very high high tax on cigarettes or any smoking device. these are the only two ways to stop smoking.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of banning smoking. The main arguments—health risks to smokers and bystanders, and the economic burden on healthcare—are relevant. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The discussion on the healthcare system is a bit repetitive, and the suggestion of 'Pigouvian tax' is introduced but not fully explored in relation to the argument for a total ban. While the position is clear, the ideas could be extended with more specific evidence or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The conclusion introduces new ideas rather than summarizing the main points, which slightly weakens the overall task response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, each with a central theme. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition 'another reason is' is a standard way to link paragraphs, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be smoother. There are instances where sentences feel disconnected, such as the transition between the health risks to bystanders and the economic argument. Additionally, the punctuation is inconsistent, with several run-on sentences and comma splices that hinder the logical flow of ideas. Improving the use of linking words and punctuation would significantly enhance the coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'life-threatening diseases', 'bystanders', and 'Pigouvian tax'. However, there are frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'tobacoo', 'evryone', 'contries', 'ultmalty') and some word-choice inaccuracies (e.g., 'donating millions on dollars' instead of 'spending'). The range is sufficient to discuss the topic, but the lack of precision and the recurring spelling mistakes limit the score. To improve, the writer should focus on proofreading for common spelling errors and expanding their range of collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'governments have be donating'), missing articles, and incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'it dose not effect' instead of 'affect'). Punctuation is a significant area for improvement, as the text contains several comma splices and run-on sentences that make the writing feel disjointed. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence boundaries and basic grammatical accuracy is essential.
