Student answer (Band 7.0)
Opinions differ regarding the effects of smoking. This issues has become increasingly important in recent years because it can cause serious illness and should be made illegal. Examining the reasons behind this trend provides a clearer understanding of the matter.
One significant effect of smoking is that it can cause fatal diseases such as lung cancer because it can block the airways in the lungs. It is evident that there is no treatment for cancerous diseases and therefore should be avoided. For example, if a smoker consistently uses tobacco products, he or she might alter the functioning of the breathing system thus causing diseases.
On the other hand, I believe that smoking alone does not directly cause fatal illness but addiction to it can cause illnesses. For instance, if a person smokes once in several days mainly for pleasure or entertainment purposes, he or she will not develop complications. Therefore, instead of making it illegal, I believe that governments, organizations and individuals should take an appropriate action including educating the public about the effects of prolonged use of cigarette and reduce its advertisement in the social media. When people are aware of its consequences, they will be in a position to make informed decisions. Furthermore, When related advertisements are reduced in the social media, few individuals will be motivated to purchase the products thus reducing smoking.
To conclude, although smoking can cause serious illnesses, it should not be made illegal. In my view, the government, organizations and individuals should take appropriate measures to avoid smoking addiction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You acknowledge the health risks of smoking while arguing against a total ban, suggesting alternative measures like education and advertising restrictions instead. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the claim that smoking 'once in several days' does not cause complications is a personal assertion that lacks scientific backing or depth. To reach a higher band, ensure your supporting arguments are more robust and analytical. You have successfully covered all parts of the task, providing a balanced view that leads to a logical conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the health risks from your proposed solutions. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'For instance', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the repetition of 'the social media' and 'the government' occasionally makes the text feel a bit rigid. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fatal diseases', 'prolonged use', and 'informed decisions'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'This issues' (should be 'These issues') and 'related advertisements' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). You rely on some repetitive phrasing, such as 'cause serious illnesses' and 'the social media'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and collocations to show greater flexibility and control over your lexical choices.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'This issues has' (subject-verb agreement), 'the social media' (article usage), and 'When related advertisements are reduced in the social media' (preposition choice). Punctuation is generally accurate, though there is an unnecessary capital letter in 'Furthermore, When'. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and article usage.
