Student answer (Band 6.0)

In different countries, smoking is the major threat for the health of people because it can cause numerous breathing problems in humans. So many people advocate that it should be made illegal in a country in order to prevent people from its deterimental effects. I also believes that it should be banned especially in the public places.

The smoking may have numerous harmful effects for human health. The chemical carcinogen, which is present in the smoke of cigarretes can cause severe breathing problems. The individuals inhaling tobaccoo, sigars and other types of smoking might get affected with lung cancer, asthma, TB and such other respiratory disorders. Hence governments should not allow people to smoke.

Passive smoking is also the major reason for which it should be banned. The exhaled air from the mouth of smoker if inhaled by another person who is non-smoke,r may have more chances to get affected. In this regard, this is not only devastating for the individuals who are taking it, but also for the other locals who are not addicted to it. For instance, in Pakistan mostly people are addicted to smoking while others are being affected by passive inhaling.

This implementation could present some problems for the industries which are manufacturing it as there economy mainly depends on it. In many countries, cigarretes are sold in high proportions and the professionals generate a huge revennue in terms of its sale. Also the people working in such enterprises would face the challenges as they earn their income through this source.

In conclusion, I would say that smoking is highly injurious to health and it should be made illegal but governments should also provide some alternative sources for the people who are involved in earning money from this business. Moreover, in public places, it should be completely restricted in order to save humans which are not addicted to it and no disturbance could get created for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that smoking should be restricted, particularly in public spaces. The ideas are relevant, such as the health risks and the economic impact on tobacco industries. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the health arguments are supported, the economic counter-argument is introduced but not fully integrated into the overall stance, leading to a slight contradiction between the call for a total ban and the suggestion of alternative sources. To reach a higher band, ensure that the position remains consistent throughout the essay and that all arguments are fully extended with logical consequences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In this regard', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where referencing is unclear, such as 'the professionals generate a huge revenue', where 'professionals' is an imprecise reference to tobacco companies. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, but the connection between the economic impact and the final conclusion could be more tightly managed to improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at topic-specific terminology like 'carcinogen', 'respiratory disorders', and 'passive smoking'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'deterimental', 'cigarretes', 'tobaccoo', 'sigars', and 'revennue'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable. While the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, the lack of precision in word choice and the recurring spelling mistakes prevent a higher score. Focusing on accurate spelling and using more sophisticated collocations would significantly improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I also believes' (subject-verb agreement), 'the major threat for the health' (preposition error), and 'humans which are not addicted' (relative pronoun error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage, such as 'non-smoke,r'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a lack of control over complex structures. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of relative clauses and prepositions.
