Student answer (Band 6.0)
In today’s world, we see numerous people smoke cigars, vapes, cigarettes etc. which is very harmful for their health but they do it regardless of the consequences. Smoking can cause serious diseases and making it illegal is a major discussion nowadays. I strongly agree that smoking is harmful and should be banned.
Smoking is a dangerous habit that can destroy people’s lives. What i mean by this is that people who smoke on a daily basis are heavily addicted and their lungs are getting worse day by day. Smoking is one the main causes of heart attacks all over the world. For instance, my father is a chainsmoker and he can’t quit smoking no matter how hard he tries. He survived two heart attacks but still after surviving those incidents he is still struggling with smoking.
On the other hand, there are some people who are heavily addicted to smoking and can’t survive without it. I have seen people having digestion issues if they don’t smoke. Some people have migraine issues and they can’t get through the day without smoking which is a major problem for a lot of people. While, i strongly maintain my stance that smoking causes serious illnesses and should be banned but the other side should also be considered equally.
At last, Smoking is a destructive habit and should be banned with immediate effect. Many lives could be saved with this single decision. A lot of people can’t quit smoking but by making it illegal could help our younger generation in a significant manner. Our younger generations should be kept miles away from bad habits such as smoking.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant reasons, such as health risks and the protection of younger generations. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the counter-argument regarding addiction and health issues is mentioned but lacks a strong rebuttal or a deeper exploration of why a ban is still the superior policy despite these challenges. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting arguments are more thoroughly expanded with logical reasoning rather than just stating the problem. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, but the overall depth of the argument could be improved by discussing the practical implications of a ban.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'On the other hand' and 'At last', to transition between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the shift between the personal anecdote about your father and the broader argument about addiction could be smoother. Additionally, the use of referencing is sometimes repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'consequences', 'destructive habit', and 'significant manner'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. There are also some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'chainsmoker' (usually two words) and the informal use of 'etc.' in an academic essay. To improve, try to incorporate more precise, topic-specific collocations and avoid informal abbreviations. Expanding your range to include more academic synonyms will help you convey your ideas with greater precision and style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'one the main causes' (missing 'of'), 'i' (should be capitalized), and 'by making it illegal could help' (incorrect sentence structure). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, consistent capitalization, and refining complex sentence constructions will significantly improve your grammatical accuracy.
