Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, smoking has became widely discussed issue as it causes serious illnesses. I completely agree with making smoking illegal because smoking can lead to life-threatening disease and also it has serious adverse effect of passive smoking on other people.
The primary reason of my agreement on making smoking band is because it can lead to serious disease conditions related to heart and lungs. As smoking can be habitat to anyone who smokes. Smoking contains harmful substance such as nicotine, it can lead to heart attack or lung cancer if it is used regularly. For instance, people who smokes regularly can develop serious condition related to lungs, and by long term use it can even lead to cancer of lungs. Therefore, making smoking illegal can reduce the number of life-threatening disease caused by smoking.
The secondary reason is smoking can cause the health problems to the passive smoker people. Passive smoking means without any intention of smoking the person inhale the smoke in the air produced by the individual who is smoking. Passive smoking is more dangerous that the active smoking, because most of the active smokers has the filter in front of cigarette as a barrier, while the passive smokers has nothing to protect themselves. For instance, passive smoking can lead to problems related to lungs earlier than the active smokers because the toxins of smoke directly goes into the lungs. Therefore, making smoking illegal can also protect people from serious illnesses related to lungs who became part of passive smoking without knowing.
In conclusion, i completely agree that smoking should be banned as it causes life-threatening illnesses to people who smokes and also to individual who get exposure of passive smoking.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding health risks and passive smoking are relevant and logically extended. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, and the ideas could be more nuanced. For instance, the discussion on passive smoking is well-supported, but the essay lacks a counter-argument or a broader perspective on the feasibility of a total ban, which would have strengthened the 'to what extent' aspect of the task. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there is occasional awkwardness in the flow between sentences, such as the repetitive use of 'Therefore' to start concluding sentences in paragraphs. Referencing is generally clear, though some phrasing, like 'the passive smoker people', is slightly unnatural and disrupts the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. There are several instances of word-choice errors and non-standard collocations, such as 'smoking can be habitat' (likely meaning 'a habit') and 'making smoking band' (should be 'banned'). Phrases like 'serious disease conditions' and 'passive smoker people' are somewhat clunky. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'toxins' and 'life-threatening', the range is limited, and the errors occasionally draw attention to the language rather than the content.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('smoking has became', 'most of the active smokers has'), article misuse ('the toxins of smoke directly goes'), and awkward phrasing ('the person inhale the smoke'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the writing.
