Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position in favor of banning smoking. However, the development of ideas is limited. While you provide personal anecdotes about your grandfather, these are not fully integrated into a structured argument. The essay lacks a formal academic tone, and the arguments regarding economic and social impacts are mentioned but not sufficiently expanded upon. To improve, you should focus on developing each paragraph with a clear topic sentence, supporting evidence, and a concluding thought, ensuring that your arguments are presented in a more formal and objective manner suitable for an IELTS Task 2 essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear organizational structure. Paragraphing is inconsistent, and there is a lack of logical progression between ideas. Cohesive devices are largely absent or misused, making the flow of the text disjointed. For example, the transition between the general health risks and your personal experience with your grandfather is abrupt. To achieve a higher band, you must use linking words and phrases (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition') to connect your ideas and ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed theme.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'dangerous', 'bad', and 'problem'. There are also frequent spelling errors, such as 'prolems', 'encomic', 'soceity', and 'punsihment', which occasionally impede readability. The use of informal phrasing like 'kindly parents should eyes on children' is inappropriate for an academic essay. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to public health and government policy, and pay closer attention to accurate spelling and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammar is characterized by frequent errors in sentence structure, punctuation, and subject-verb agreement. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, such as 'its can effect other peoples which can stay a smoking people.' There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the frequent misuse of articles and verb tenses makes the text difficult to follow at times. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practice using a wider variety of grammatical structures, such as relative clauses and conditional sentences.
