Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of banning smoking. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive and relies heavily on listing health consequences rather than exploring the broader social or economic arguments for a ban. While the personal example of the 'neighborhood uncle' is relevant, the explanation of how smoking causes diabetes is scientifically inaccurate and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, you should focus on developing more sophisticated arguments regarding the role of government, public health policy, and the balance between personal freedom and societal welfare, rather than focusing primarily on medical descriptions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow is often interrupted by awkward phrasing and a lack of cohesive devices. Transitions between sentences are frequently missing or mechanical (e.g., 'Some diseases are following...'). The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks a clear topic sentence followed by supporting evidence. Improving the use of linking words such as 'furthermore,' 'consequently,' and 'in addition' would significantly enhance the readability and logical flow of your arguments.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are several instances of word-choice errors and non-standard collocations, such as 'busy disease,' 'body becomes very lose,' and 'commonly held by smoking.' These errors sometimes impede the clarity of your message. You rely on basic descriptors like 'very bad' or 'very dangerous' throughout the text. To improve, you should focus on learning topic-specific collocations related to public health and policy, and work on using more precise adjectives and verbs to convey your points more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement, article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are run-on or lack proper punctuation, such as 'Smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal i totaly agree with this statement.' There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the errors in basic grammar often distract the reader. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that each sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practicing the correct use of articles and prepositions.
