Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that smoking should be illegal. However, the development of ideas is limited and often lacks clarity. The argument regarding the 'elites' and the economic impact of smoking is somewhat tangential and lacks logical support. Furthermore, the response is under the 250-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the overall task achievement. The ideas are presented but are not fully extended or supported with coherent evidence, leading to a fragmented argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear structure. While there are paragraph breaks, the flow of ideas between and within paragraphs is disjointed. Cohesive devices are used in a very limited and often mechanical way (e.g., 'However', 'Furthermore', 'ON conclusion'). The referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of the argument. The lack of logical transitions between the health impacts and the political commentary on 'elites' results in a lack of overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and often inaccurate. There are significant spelling errors such as 'tubercloses' (tuberculosis), 'campgain' (campaign), and 'ad' (and). The word choice is often imprecise, such as 'consume this gas' to refer to smoking and 'closed the doors of the hell'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas clearly, and the frequent errors in word formation and spelling hinder the reader's understanding of the intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'most of the countries are not yet banned'), sentence structure (e.g., 'Every breath of man brings him near to death had hear about this'), and tense usage. Punctuation is also problematic, with many run-on sentences and missing commas. The range of structures is limited, and the errors are pervasive throughout the text, making it difficult to identify a consistent control of complex grammatical forms.
