Student answer (Band 6.0)

Smoking is injurious to health, it is a well known fact. It can make life difficult for both the smokers and people around them. I strongly condemn that it should be banned and stated as illegal because the consequences it have are horrible. The reasons for my strong dislike and the urge to prohibit this are many. Few of them I will discuss to support my idea.

First and foremost, its bad for human health specially for lungs considering both active and passive way. It files the lungs with tar which not only detoriate the breathing process but eventually opens the death door for anyone. Apart from its effects on smokers it continously and badly effect the people flock around the person they can be from their families, friends, coworkers or even random people anywhere.

For instance, people who smoke are more likely to damage their lungs as compared to normal people.

Along with health threat it also makes many folks uncomfortable. It can be due to their health issues or just dislikeness in general. For Example , people who have Asthma or any other medical condition related to breathing can't stand such people.

Furthermore, it makes people addictive to Nicotin. It helps them getting the shots of happiness under the drug effect. So people like to use them when they are upset or just mentally stressed. This way they try to run away from such unpleasant feelings. In this way their habit of escape becomes addiction which they find later hard to quit.

For instance, one of my friends father lost his life, due to this indispencable habit of him. He knew that its bad but he could not leave that because he had became addictive. He promised his family several times that he quit this habit but it was easy to said, hard to do. Eventually he died because his lungs gave up.

So considering all the aftermaths, I dont see any reason not to support its eradication. People who make fortune by selling it should also face strict punishments as they do not value the human life, along with people who are its deadly consumers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in favor of banning smoking. The ideas are relevant, focusing on health risks, passive smoking, and addiction. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the health and addiction arguments are clear, the suggestion that sellers should face 'strict punishments' is a bit underdeveloped and lacks nuance. The essay maintains a consistent position throughout, but the arguments could be strengthened by exploring the economic or social implications of such a ban to provide a more balanced or comprehensive view. Overall, the task is addressed adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First and foremost,' 'Along with,' and 'Furthermore,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'people flock around the person they can be from their families.' Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother to achieve a more natural progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. There are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'detoriate' (deteriorate), 'indispencable' (indispensable), and 'Nicotin' (nicotine). Phrases like 'opens the death door' and 'shots of happiness' are non-standard collocations. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary, the frequent errors in spelling and word formation occasionally distract the reader, though they do not prevent understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('consequences it have', 'habit of him'), article usage, and punctuation. For example, 'it was easy to said, hard to do' contains a grammatical error. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction limit the score. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for common errors like verb tense consistency and word order.
