Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world there are numerous topics that subjects to debate, one such important highlight is the topic of smoking and its effects on health. Smoking causes many problems and thus it is considerably a solution to make it illegal.

To start with the subject, there are various examples and evidences from daily life that smoking is killing people in one form or another. The addiction of smoking is having hilarious effects on lives of people as well as families. For example, when a drug addictor spend money on drugs instead of maintaining a healthy lifestyle for the family the under members of the family e.g the children, parents or wife, gets affected badly by the financial circumstances. One should not exceed the limit of spending money on smoking rather that providing other basic life necessities to the family.

There are wide range of bad effects of smoking on a person's health as well as to those who are nearby. It causes lungs cancer, impacts badly on kidneys and damages mental health as well. Smoking also arises wast amount of social issues, for instance the domestic violence is a major example in many cases. In some cases it leads the domestic violence to the separation of the families and results in a broken family because it is not considered acceptable in the society.

In that way, the debate to make smoking illegal is not quite surprising as the society had to show a reaction to its negative results and they did. On the other hand, many authorities are working to control the over usage or badly use of smoking and to prevent youngsters from smoking. Until now, smoking is not made illegal and is considered ethically not so good habit. But government should made it illegal as it is of no positive use.

To conclude, the government should simply put a ban over the manufacturing, smuggling and usage of smoking and should make sure that is not been delivered to the young generation as it may cause badly over an entire youth with absolute no positive purpose.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of banning smoking. However, the development of ideas is inconsistent. While you mention health and social issues, the argument regarding 'drug addiction' is slightly off-topic as it conflates smoking with illegal narcotics. The reasoning is somewhat repetitive, and some points, such as the link between smoking and domestic violence, are asserted without sufficient logical explanation or evidence. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a distinct, well-explained reason that directly supports your thesis without drifting into unrelated social issues.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. You use some cohesive devices like 'To start with' and 'On the other hand', but these are sometimes used mechanically or inappropriately. For instance, the transition 'In that way' does not effectively link the previous paragraph to the discussion of government intervention. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'the under members of the family', which is awkward. Improving the flow between sentences and using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are several instances of incorrect word choice and collocation. For example, you use 'hilarious effects' (which means funny, not harmful), 'drug addictor' (should be 'addict'), and 'badly use' (should be 'misuse'). These errors occasionally impede the clarity of your message. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'manufacturing' and 'smuggling', the overall range is limited. Focusing on learning collocations and ensuring words are used in the correct context will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('government should made it illegal'), incorrect word forms ('wast amount' instead of 'vast amount'), and awkward phrasing ('the under members of the family'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas. While these errors do not completely prevent the reader from understanding your argument, they are frequent enough to impact the flow and indicate a lack of control over more complex grammatical structures.
