Student answer (Band 5.0)

I agreed to a great extent that smoking can cause serious illness and it should be made illegal. Below, I will give the reasons to support my answers.

Firstly, everyone agreed that smoking cause cancer which is one of the most fatal and nasty disease. Also on the packet of the smoking things, it is mentioned that it is dangerous for health and it may cause lungs cancer. There are many types of smoking like vape, pod and there is also material which is called something which I not know but they are harmful for our body. Mostly, the most common smoking material is a vape which is common in our young generation.

Major reason of smoking is that, most of the people considered it a thing to relax, it not be considered a dangerous material. Because it not make the people unconcious, it also a true statement but after the long interval of time, it may cause lungs cancer, feet disorder etc.

Firstly, when the young people starts smoking it feels very relaxing and after a long time it became a habit and spread around in all the association of the smoker.

It should be made illegal because firstly it is relaxing but after the long time it may cause serious illness which is harmful for everyone. Government should take a serious action on it and it become completely banned. Government should made anti-smoking departments.

In conclusion, firstly there in no disadvantage of smoking but after the long interval of time it may cause serious diseases.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position, but the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. While you mention health risks like cancer, the arguments lack depth and logical progression. For example, the paragraph regarding 'vape' and 'pod' is underdeveloped, and the claim that there is 'no disadvantage of smoking' in the conclusion contradicts your earlier points, suggesting a lack of clarity in your argument. To improve, focus on providing specific, well-explained reasons for your position rather than repeating the same points about health risks and relaxation. Ensure your conclusion aligns with your introduction and body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay uses basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly' and 'In conclusion', but these are used repetitively and sometimes incorrectly. The paragraphing is disjointed; for instance, the second and third paragraphs contain overlapping ideas, and the final paragraph is very brief. The logical flow is frequently interrupted by unclear transitions, such as the sudden shift from discussing health risks to the social aspects of smoking. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') and ensure each paragraph focuses on a single, distinct main idea that supports your overall argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'smoking things', 'smoking material', and 'long interval of time'. There are also instances of word-choice errors, such as 'association of the smoker' and 'feet disorder', which do not clearly convey your intended meaning. To reach a higher band, you need to use a more varied range of vocabulary, including collocations related to health and public policy. Avoid using vague terms like 'something which I not know' and instead use more precise academic language to describe the substances or concepts you are discussing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'smoking cause cancer', 'it not be considered'), tense inconsistencies, and missing articles. Sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'Government should take a serious action on it and it become completely banned.' To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of auxiliary verbs. Proofreading for common errors like missing 's' on third-person singular verbs would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
