Student answer (Band 6.0)

Smoking has long been regarded as injurious to health. Health profesionals forbid smoking to avoid prevetable health hazards. I largely agree to the statement that smoking should be made illegal for its serious consequences. But some people argue agaist it.

Tobacco is the active ingridient of ciggarette which release toxic substances when inhaled. It may lead to multiple cancers in the body including mouth and lungs. It also reduces immunity to many infections and a leading cause of heart diseases. The govermnents have already raised awarness programmes agaist smoking. Furthermore, cigarette packets in the market are labelled with diagramatic presentation of its serious side effects. Even advertisemnet of smoking is ban on national television in many countries. Despite all these efforts unfortunately many people smoke cigerrate. That is why many people strongly recommend to make smoking illegal to make its avoidance effective. If smoking would be regarded as criminal act people will avoid smoking.

On the contrary, many people believe that compaign against smoking should be made effective by proper awareness programs. Moreover, they think making it illegal is not a solution and may lead to losses to people who belong to tobacco businesses. Overuse of smoking should be controlled rather than labelling it a criminal act.

Conclusively, I believe that prevention is better than cure. Smoking cause serious health hazards not only to smokers but also people around them by inhaling the smoke through passive smoking. Smoking control need aggressive steps at national and international levels. This can be only made possible if smoking is regarded as ciminal act.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether smoking should be made illegal. The writer acknowledges both sides of the argument, stating a clear view in the introduction and reiterating it in the conclusion. Ideas are relevant, noting health consequences, passive smoking, and economic concerns regarding tobacco businesses. However, some arguments are slightly repetitive or under-developed, such as the counter-argument about businesses, which lacks deeper exploration. Examples and explanations are given, though some are general rather than specific. This aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors, as the prompt is addressed with a clear position and relevant, if occasionally brief, supporting ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is arranged into logical paragraphs with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing both perspectives, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Furthermore', 'Despite all these efforts', and 'On the contrary'. However, referencing and paragraph transitions are at times mechanical or somewhat abrupt. For instance, the transition between discussing cigarette packets and the criminalisation of smoking lacks smooth connective tissue. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, but the overall progression could be more seamless. This performance fits the Band 6 criteria for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'injurious', 'prevetable', 'active ingridient', and 'passive smoking'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors throughout the essay, such as 'profesionals', 'prevetable', 'ingridient', 'ciggarette', 'govermnents', 'awarness', 'diagramatic', 'advertisemnet', 'ban' (instead of banned), 'ciggerrate', 'compaign', and 'ciminal'. These spelling mistakes and occasional word-choice issues do not severely impede communication, but they prevent the score from reaching a higher band. Because the vocabulary is adequate but contains frequent spelling inaccuracies, a Band 5.5 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If smoking would be regarded as criminal act people will avoid smoking', which contains a minor tense error). Grammatical errors are present, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Smoking cause serious health hazards', 'Smoking control need aggressive steps') and tense inconsistencies. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors do occur, they rarely impede the overall flow or comprehension of the reader. This performance aligns closely with the Band 6 descriptors, reflecting a mix of structures and a moderate frequency of non-systematic errors.
