Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether smoking should be made illegal, taking a clear position that you partly/strongly agree. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. For instance, the argument that banning smoking would lead to healthier young people and cleaner environments is repeated across multiple paragraphs without sufficient extension or fresh examples. The reference to minor illnesses in the introduction is also contradictory and under-developed. While all parts of the prompt are touched upon, the lack of depth and the somewhat contradictory stance place this at a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the overall logical progression is frequently disrupted by repetitive transitions and mechanical cohesive devices like 'Moving further ahead' and 'In addition'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas is somewhat disjointed—for example, second-hand smoke and environmental pollution are mixed in with other points rather than being clearly separated into a distinct thematic paragraph. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the mechanical repetition of phrases ('if ciggrate is illegal') negatively impacts the flow. This fits the Band 5.0 descriptors for inadequate and repetitive use of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling errors such as 'ciggrate', 'healh', 'habbits', 'acction', and 'envirment'. There are attempts at topic-specific vocabulary ('respiratory problems', 'lung cancer', 'second hand'), but word choice and collocation errors are frequent ('permanent bain', 'take to it for habbit'). Vocabulary control is strained throughout the response, meaning the lexical resource aligns closely with Band 4.5 to 5.0 descriptors, specifically meriting a Band 5.0 for a limited, minimally adequate range that causes some difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on conditional 'if' clauses that are frequently ungrammatical or structurally incomplete (e.g., 'if smoking were Illegally', 'if ciggrate is permanent bain'). Punctuation errors are widespread, including spaces before commas and missing periods. Simple sentences often contain basic errors, and complex structures are frequently faulty. The high frequency of grammatical errors causes constant difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 4.0 descriptor well.
