Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether smoking should be made illegal, presenting a clear personal stance that it should be banned for women and children. However, the task is only partially addressed due to several factors. Firstly, the response fails to meet the minimum word count of 250 words, coming in at 244 words, which leads to a necessary penalty under Task Achievement. Secondly, the arguments provided are largely under-developed and rely on sweeping, unsubstantiated generalisations without strong academic support. While the writer touches on health impacts such as lung and breathing problems, the development of ideas is limited, repetitive, and lacks depth. For these reasons, the score reflects a partial address of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5
The essay lacks proper paragraphing conventions, presenting almost every sentence or short thought as its own isolated line, which severely disrupts the logical flow and visual progression of the text. There is an absence of effective cohesive devices; sentences are frequently linked mechanically or abruptly without smooth transitions. For instance, the transition between discussing male health issues and female health issues lacks logical signposting. While the general sequence moves from types of smoking to health effects and finally to government intervention, the poor paragraph structure and lack of referencing make the overall arrangement disjointed and difficult to follow consistently.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and heavily flawed by spelling and word-choice errors. Throughout the text, common words are misspelled repeatedly, such as 'smooking' instead of 'smoking', 'cigerettes' instead of 'cigarettes', 'socaity' instead of 'society', 'nad' instead of 'and', and 'shoopkepers' instead of 'shopkeepers'. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for conveying simple ideas, but lacks the flexibility or precision required for higher bands. Less common lexical items are attempted unsuccessfully due to severe spelling inaccuracies and improper collocation, which occasionally impedes the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the essay, with a very limited range of structures successfully produced. Most sentences are simple, and attempts at more complex or compound structures contain frequent, noticeable errors. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The childrens who use...', 'Government have to Allow...', 'shoopkepers who providing...'), missing auxiliary verbs, incorrect prepositions, and punctuation errors. For example, sentences frequently start with conjunctions or are fragmented incorrectly. These frequent errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and demonstrate poor command over basic English grammar.
