Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear stance that smoking should be made illegal due to health and developmental concerns. The writer attempts to support this with reasons such as dopamine release, physical deterioration, and impacts on academic and cognitive performance. However, the ideas are often underdeveloped and lack logical extension. For instance, the reference to an Oxford University survey lacks clarity and specific detail, while the claim about 90 percent of children losing exam marks due to smoking is implausible and unsupported by realistic evidence. Furthermore, some phrasing in the introduction and body paragraphs is confusing or off-point, suggesting a partial rather than fully developed handling of the task. Based on these descriptors, the response aligns with Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, which shows basic organisational structure. However, overall progression is weak and the flow is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions, such as 'To commence with, there are multifarious reason that is why smoking cause health illness' and 'on the contrast'. Cohesive devices are often used inaccurately or mechanically, and referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the logical links between sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion fails at several points due to run-on sentences and confusing punctuation. These features correspond to a Band 5.0 rating for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, featuring frequent word-formation errors and inaccurate collocations throughout the text. Examples include 'smoking can becomes serious concern', 'casue health issues', 'food dissloving strength', 'ouit that habit', and 'smokimg'. The writer attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'multifarious', 'progression', and 'productivity', but these terms are often deployed incorrectly in context. While the lexicon is sufficient to convey a general topic, noticeable errors in spelling, word choice, and word forms cause difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to Band 4.5, which is rounded to 5.0 based on intermittent attempts at broader vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences or faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent, heavy grammatical errors that impede communication, such as missing subject-verb agreement ('smoking can becomes', 'there are multifarious reason'), incorrect verb forms ('that is made by illegal methods', 'if we can touch'), and structural fragmentation ('To elucidate, smoking can consume our much time and after the consumption of smoking we feel tired or lazy which are vast concern trouble for many of the individuals also smoking is that habit...'). Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences lacking appropriate terminal punctuation. This profile fits the Band 4.0 descriptors closely.
