Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear stance that smoking should be made illegal due to its severe health and societal impacts. The writer covers both physical and mental health consequences, providing relevant supporting arguments such as respiratory issues, addiction, and the impact on passive smokers. However, some ideas are stated rather than fully developed, such as the claim that smokers spend 'half lives than non smokers', which lacks factual support or deep explanation. The position is maintained throughout the essay, and the conclusion succinctly reiterates the main thesis. Overall, the task is addressed adequately with a clear point of view, corresponding to a Band 6.0 level of development and task coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure dividing the introduction, physical health, mental health, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', and 'Therefore'. However, the referencing and connection between sentences can sometimes feel mechanical or slightly abrupt, as seen in the sudden shift from tobacco to weed in the second paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related ideas, but logical flow within paragraphs occasionally lacks smooth transitions. This fits the Band 6 descriptor where cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words such as 'disasterous', 'fatique', and 'prosperity'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors throughout the text, including 'disasterous' (disastrous), 'awarness' (awareness), 'helth' (health), 'effects' instead of affects in several instances, 'fatique' (fatigue), 'suffers' (suffer), 'exixtence' (existence), 'compaings' (campaigns), and 'hug' (hub). Word choice is occasionally imprecise, such as 'circulate their whole exixtence around it'. While communication is not impeded, these lexical and spelling inaccuracies restrict the score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as conditional and relative clauses. There are, however, frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing. Examples include 'Smokers roughly spend half lives than non smokers' (missing article and incorrect comparative structure), 'Kidneys of a smoker turns black and loses its efficency' (subject-verb agreement and pronoun reference issues), and 'passive smokers suffers' (subject-verb agreement). Punctuation and capitalization are generally acceptable, but grammatical slips are recurrent enough to prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. These errors correspond to a Band 5.5 performance.
