Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both sides of whether smoking should be made illegal and presents a clear position. The introduction outlines the argument, and body paragraphs present reasons such as life-threatening diseases, respiratory problems, and psychological impacts. There is also a paragraph representing the opposing view that it is a personal choice. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, particularly in the body paragraphs where sentences like 'smoking can be the foundation of various life-threatening diseases' merely restate the prompt without deep extension or specific supporting examples. The conclusion clearly states the writer's stance. According to the band descriptors, this performance aligns best with Band 5.5, rounded to 5.0 for limited and under-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays some overall organization, attempting an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the progression of ideas lacks clarity, and paragraphing is poorly managed. For instance, the second and third body paragraphs are very brief and repetitive, consisting largely of single sentences that could be combined. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or mechanical, such as the awkward transition 'On another plif'. Furthermore, referencing and logical flow are disrupted by frequent grammatical and mechanical errors, making the transitions between ideas unclear at times. This reflects the characteristics of Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited vocabulary with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are numerous spelling, word choice, and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'cape town' (capitalization), 'kindlt' (kindly), 'declear' (declare), 'comdemn' (condemn), 'reasearch' (research), 'effect' (affect), 'cosiderable' (considerable), 'psycological' (psychological), 'plif' (cliff/part), 'band' (ban), and 'substance' (substances). While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'life-threatening' and 'justification', the high frequency of lexical and spelling errors restricts the effective communication of ideas, placing this response firmly in the Band 5.0 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, articles, punctuation, and sentence structure. Examples include 'the three basic needs of all human being are', 'The world improve the same arguments would be believed', 'the rate of life-threatening diseases are rapidly increased', and 'one one should implement any law which challenge the someone's personal rights'. Many complex sentence structures are faulty and obscure meaning. Punctuation is also problematic, with long, run-on sentences connected by commas rather than proper conjunctions or full stops. These persistent errors match the Band 5.0 descriptors.
