Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The student attempts to address the prompt by expressing clear agreement with the statement that smoking should be made illegal, but the response falls significantly short of the required 250-word minimum, containing only 170 words and ending abruptly mid-sentence. Consequently, the ideas are underdeveloped and lack adequate support. While the writer mentions health risks and social impacts, these points remain superficial and repetitive, preventing the response from reaching a higher band. As per the task requirements, the word count deficiency heavily impacts the Task Achievement score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays basic structural organisation with an introduction and body paragraphs, though it cuts off prematurely in the final section. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often awkward, mechanical, or misused, such as 'to explain' and 'as a result' in inappropriate contexts. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal flow of ideas is disjointed, making the progression difficult to follow. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as pronoun shifts between singular and plural forms when discussing smokers.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like 'smoking', 'sick', and 'harmful'. There are numerous word choice and word formation errors throughout the text, such as 'affected' instead of 'affecting', 'dengerous' for 'dangerous', 'madr community more sickers', and 'bocame to weak'. These lexical inaccuracies and severe spelling errors strain the reader and reflect a limited lexical range that is only minimally adequate for expressing basic thoughts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

Grammatical control is weak, with frequent and pervasive errors in almost every sentence. The student attempts a few complex structures with conditional clauses like 'if someone is doing smoking whole the time', but these are consistently flawed. Basic errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('smoker are not eating'), incorrect tense usage, and poor punctuation. The high frequency of errors causes significant difficulty for the reader and means error-free sentences are extremely rare.
