Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether smoking should be made illegal due to its health risks. A clear position is stated: 'i strongly agreed with this smoking should be also banned.' Ideas are presented, such as health consequences, passive smoking, air pollution, and the influence of celebrities on the young generation. However, these ideas are largely under-developed and lack extension. The reasoning remains basic, relying on repetitive points like 'it is very harmful' without offering deeper analysis or well-supported arguments. Examples provided, such as personal difficulty breathing, are anecdotal and underdeveloped rather than academic evidence. While all parts of the prompt are touched upon, the lack of thorough development places this response firmly at Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response attempts basic paragraphing, separating the introduction, body points, and a brief conclusion, although formatting is erratic. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical, repetitive, or inappropriately linked (e.g., 'To begin with this', 'to more elaborate this', 'last but not least'). Furthermore, progression is sometimes obscured by abrupt shifts in ideas, such as jumping from passive smoking to air pollution and then to celebrity endorsements within the same paragraph. Paragraphing is not consistently managed to guide the reader logically through distinct arguments. Referencing is occasionally unclear, leading to a choppy flow. Overall, the organizational structure displays some clear attempts at cohesion, but these are frequently inaccurate or over-used, fitting the Band 5 profile.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive throughout the essay. Words like 'dangerous', 'harmful', 'health', and 'smoke' are used repeatedly without much variation. There are attempts at less common vocabulary items (e.g., 'pigmentation', 'renowned personality', 'unknowingly'), but these are often marred by inappropriate collocations or word choices (e.g., 'masses suffer', 'take a breathe easily', 'inspire the from'). Spelling and word-form errors are noticeable ('percpective', 'agreed', 'surronding', 'unknowlingly', 'easilt'), though they do not completely impede overall communication. The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for expressing basic thoughts, corresponding to a Band 5 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic coordination. Where complex structures are attempted, they are frequently faulty and contain frequent structural errors (e.g., 'smoking is the most dangerous for the health because of smoking people suffer...'). There are fundamental issues with punctuation, capitalization (e.g., lowercase 'i', random spacing before commas), and verb tense consistency. Grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text, including missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and faulty subject-verb agreement. These errors frequently cause strain and difficulty for the reader, aligning with the descriptors for Band 4.5 to 5.0; a score of 5.0 reflects the occasional successful simple structure.
