Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by agreeing that smoking should be illegal due to health risks. However, the response falls significantly short of the 250-word minimum, containing only 170 words. Because of this severe under-length, the ideas cannot be fully developed, leading to heavy repetition of the phrase 'harmfull particle' and 'this people'. While a clear position is stated, the lack of adequate length and development severely limits the task response. Therefore, it fits the descriptor for a band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into three paragraphs, including a brief introduction and two body paragraphs, but it cuts off prematurely. The student attempts to use transition markers such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand', but the second transitional phrase is mismatched since it follows another supporting point rather than a contrasting view. Referencing is also unclear in places, such as 'Government spends money over this people'. Overall, the organization shows some basic structure, but progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and incomplete thoughts.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary range is very limited and repetitive. The student heavily relies on words like 'harmfull particle' (incorrectly pluralized/used for smoke and substances) and 'consumer'. There are also frequent spelling errors, such as 'harmfull', 'sever', and 'unecessary'. While the vocabulary is just about adequate to convey the basic topic of smoking and health, the constant repetition and word choice inaccuracies prevent it from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures often contain errors, such as 'there are many things that are not meant to do but still is legal'. Subject-verb agreement issues are frequent, alongside persistent punctuation errors and missing articles. The errors often cause strain and difficulty for the reader, aligning closely with band 4.5 descriptors.
