Student answer (Band 5.0)

Citizens all over the world addicted with cigarettes. This trend is increasing day by day as new generation have love with smoking. The demerits of smoking is undeniable. It cause many serious illnesses. In my view smoking should be illegal as it has more cons than pros on the health of the people.

One major reason of banning smoking is that it disturb the physical health of the Citizens. Smoking damage the lungs as when people addicted they didnot have limit of smoking. The unlimited quantity have straight negative impact on their lung and had blockage in it. Moreover these kind of health issues are not easily curable. It takes long time to recover.

In addition to this, Smoking become nessary requirment of the people. They spend alot of money to purchase it on the daily basis whereas they can spend those money on something else which had positive impact on their lifes.

Furthermore, Rise in the demand of cigarette had negative impact on the environment as air pollution rise and will cause health relate concerns such as cough and breathing issue. Additionaly, It also help people to promote demerits goods while promoting merits good with that the businesses of demerits will grow which encourages the citizens to stop doing merit goods business such as pharma. In the economy of the country the supply of demerit will rise in the future.

In conclusion to this, I reiterate that government should banned the smoking. There are certain ways to stop the production as by imposing higher taxes on the manufacturers of demerit goods. Moreover, By giving subsidies to merit goods so that every want to manufacturer merit goods instead of demerit goods.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by presenting a clear position that smoking should be made illegal due to health and economic cons. The ideas presented are relevant, but their development is limited and occasionally repetitive. For instance, the discussion on health issues in the second paragraph mentions that smoking damages the lungs and causes blockages, but the explanation remains basic without strong supporting evidence or deeper elaboration. Furthermore, the argument regarding merit and demerit goods in the fourth paragraph becomes slightly confused and tangential. Nevertheless, all parts of the prompt are addressed, supporting a Band 5.5 score under Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and mechanical cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Additionaly,' which do not always connect ideas smoothly. Paragraphing is attempted, but some paragraphs contain multiple disjointed points, such as the blending of environmental concerns and economic market shifts in the fourth paragraph. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the precise logical path. These factors indicate a level consistent with Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource is limited and adequate only for basic communication. There are frequent word choice and collocation errors, such as 'addicted with cigarettes,' 'love with smoking,' 'demerits goods,' and 'merits good.' The vocabulary range is narrow, relying on simple terms like 'bad,' 'money,' and 'health issues,' with unsuccessful attempts at more advanced terminology. Spelling mistakes, such as 'nessary,' 'requirment,' and 'Additionaly,' also occur throughout the text. These persistent lexical inaccuracies place the response firmly in the Band 5.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but these are frequently faulty. There are widespread grammatical errors, including missing auxiliary verbs ('as when people addicted they didnot have limit'), subject-verb agreement issues ('Rise in the demand... had negative impact'), and incorrect preposition usage. Punctuation and capitalization errors are also noticeable. While the basic meaning can usually be understood, the high frequency of grammatical errors across almost every sentence prevents the response from achieving a higher score, matching the descriptors for Band 4.5.
